Winterpock Weekly Update - 1/7/18

posted Jan 8, 2018, 7:12 AM by Laura Prymak
Hi Winterpock Families! I hope you are staying warm with these frigid temperatures! We cannot wait to get back to school and into our normal school routine! We miss your children! In case you didn’t get the message, students will NOT have school on Monday, January 8th, due to the unsafe condition of the roads. If you follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal), I hope that you will get to see photos highlighting our #WPESwolves throughout the rest of the week! Week sixteen was short and sweet! We look forward to a sensational and sunny week seventeen of school with your children!

Here is the weekly update:

*No School/Make-Up Dates: There will be no school on Monday, January 8th, for students or teachers. Stay tuned to CCPS emails and phone calls for updated information. Friday, February 2nd, previously an Early Release Day for students, is now a FULL day of school. Also, Monday, February 19th, previously a holiday for Presidents’ Day, is now a FULL day of school.

*Dress for the Weather: Thank you for ensuring that your children are dressed appropriately for the extreme temperatures! (Please remember to write your child’s name in coats, hats, gloves, etc.) Here are the Elementary School Guidelines for Outdoor Recess Temperature that are published in the CCPS Parent Handbook. Elementary Schools should use outside temperature of 32 to 35 degrees F as the temperature to consider limiting outdoor recess. The judgment of the school staff is the ultimate guide. School staff should continue to be aware of weather conditions such as wind, overcast, relative humidity, and precipitation and their effect on how cold it feels to be outside. As important as the other conditions, the students must be dressed for the weather.

*Core Value Breakfast RESCHEDULED: We look forward to recognizing our November Core Value students on Friday, January 12th at 7:45 a.m. Many thanks to our PTA for providing the breakfast!

*STEAM Family Day: See an attached flyer regarding a special STEAM Family Day on Saturday, January 13th from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Science Museum of Virginia. It will be fun!

*Rising 6th Grade “Nights” at TCMS, SCMS, and BBMS: See the attached flyer for TCMS! There is an orientation for parents of rising 6th graders that will attend Tomahawk Creek Middle School in Fall 2018 on Wednesday, January 10th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. TCMS Sixth Parent Orientation '18.pdf

According to their website, Swift Creek Middle School will host a Rising 6th Grade Curriculum Night on Tuesday, January 23rd from 6:30-8:30 p.m. where the students actually tour the school. The snow date is January 30th. According to an email received by our school counselor, Bailey Bridge Middle School will host their annual VIB Night (Rising 6th Grade Parent Night) on February 22nd from 6:00-9:00 p.m. with a snow date of March 1st. We will keep you informed as we receive additional information!

Gifted/Talented Referral Deadline Approaching for Grades 2-4: The Gifted/Talented Referral Deadline for Grades 2-4 is Tuesday, January 16th. Please talk to your classroom teacher and/or school counselor if you have any questions.

*Cosby High School Band Booster Shoe Drive: The Cosby High School Band is very thankful for our support of their Shoe Drive! The CHS Band Boosters are collecting new and gently-used shoes of all sizes to raise funds for their CHS band programs. A collection box for donated shoes will be placed in the front hallway by the office. Collected shoes are used to support micro-enterprise vendors. Micro-enterprises are small businesses in developing nations. Let’s support the CHS band programs by cleaning out our closets and donating our gently worn, used, and new shoes. This shoe drive fundraiser will continue until March 2nd. Their goal is to collect 2500 pairs of shoes! They greatly appreciate being able to put a collection box at Winterpock! Go Titans!

*An Update from the Art Room: Our students are working on some exciting new projects in art class including weaving, clay, and collage. Mrs. Fontana and Ms. Nixon would love to have some materials that you may have around the house. They are in need of scrap ribbon, LOTS of yarn, paper grocery bags, scrapbooking paper, and buttons. Please send any donations to the art room. Thank you so much for your continued support of the arts! We cannot wait to see what our students create!

*Winterpock Reading Challenge: During Week Fifteen, we read 37,440 minutes! (The snow days after a break have impacted reporting! No worries! Classroom teachers will update the information this week.) Our unofficial total after fifteen weeks is 1,191,800 minutes read as a school! Please continue to write the total number of minutes read in the “total minutes” column and initial. Teachers will continue to log total minutes into our school spreadsheet on Mondays (…or Tuesdays!). Spirit sticks will be awarded to students that read 1,000 (or more) minutes during the entire Reading Challenge. Impressive!

*Winterpock Scholastic Book Fair: Mrs. Witham and Mrs. Robinson are beginning to organize our School Book Fair that will take place in the gym from January 22nd-26th. If you would like to volunteer to assist with this event, please go here to sign up! The Book Fair Family Night will be on Friday, January 19th, from 5:00-7:30 p.m. in the gym.

*K-Kids Update: Our K-Kids are continuing to collect aluminum can tabs to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House of Richmond! Also, during our Winterpock Scholastic Book Fair, K-Kids will be collecting book donations to send to Horace O’Bryant School in the Florida Keys. See the attached flyer. Thank you for supporting our club! K-Kids Club Book Drive.pdf
