Winterpock Weekly Update - 1/27/19

posted Jan 27, 2019, 4:36 PM by Laura Prymak
Hi Winterpock Families! I hope that your weekend has been fun! Many thanks to all of you that donated snacks for our teachers last Friday! They were delicious! It was great seeing so many of you at our Book Fair Family Night on Friday evening! We are looking forward to a full week of school this week! If you follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal), you will see photos highlighting our #WPESwolves throughout the week! We look forward to a wonderful week twenty-one of school with your children!

Here are a few updates and reminders:

*School Spirit Day: Wear your Favorite Sports Team Jersey Day! On this Friday, February 1st, wear your favorite football or other sports team jersey! (Yes, I will be looking for my fellow New England Patriots fans! Oh my!)

*CCPS Transportation Communication: When buses are delayed in the morning or afternoon, you should receive and email and/or voice call from CCPS Transportation with this information. Feel free to contact CCPS Transportation, Area 3, at (804) 739-6262 if you have any questions or concerns regarding bus routes and/or bus stop times. (It is our understanding that Bus Route 6 should improve this week as road construction crews will not “hold” buses for longer than five minutes in the work zone.) Again, please reach out to CCPS Transportation for specific information. Thank you!

*Winterpock Scholastic Book Fair: Mrs. Witham and Mrs. Robinson are beginning to organize our School Book Fair that will take place in the gym from January 28th-February 1st. If you would like to volunteer to assist with this event, please go here to sign up!

*Celebrating Black History Month: During the month of February, we will honor the achievements and contributions made by African Americans on the morning announcements. Please ask your child to share with you what they learn! Also, teachers will be provided with resources for their classrooms from the Virginia Department of Education.

*Spring Run Baseball & Softball: See the attached CCPS approved flyer that was recently shared with me regarding the 2019 Spring Run Baseball & Softball Registration. Spring Training will be here before we know it! Spring Run Baseball.pdf SRAA_Softball_Flyer_2019.pdf

*News from the CCPS Office of Family and Community Engagement (FACE):
  • FACE will be hosting a series of documentary films over the next two months. The documentaries selected are in alignment with the FACE mission and CCPS dedication to connect our community to information through explorations of cultural competency, social-emotional, special education, and adolescent supports. Parents, community members, and staff are encouraged to attend. To find out more about these films visit http://bit.ly/FACEFWDFILM.
  • FACE, and the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC), is offering on-going, monthly engagement opportunities designed to not only maximize a parent's understanding of the IEP process but provide opportunities to explore other topics related to parenting an exceptional child. The classes are offered at CTC @ Hull on the first Thursday (a.m.) and the third Thursday (p.m.) of each month. For more information and to register please visit: bit.ly/IEPsAtoZ. Here is a video on the “IEPs A to Z” classes being offered to you!

*MSiC Enrichment Program: See the attached flyer for information on “Discoverers” (Grades 4-5). This is an additional opportunity for your children to explore STEM! Registrations will be continuously accepted until classes are filled. “Discoverers” classes will be held on February 23rd, March 2nd, and March 9th. DiscoverersBrochureSpring_2019.pdf

*A Message from our K-Kids: K-Kids are continuing to collect aluminum can tabs in the huge bin in the front of the school near the cafeteria to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House of Richmond. Thanks for sending them in throughout the school year!

*Dress for the Weather: Thank you for ensuring that your children are dressed appropriately for the extreme temperatures! (Please remember to write your child’s name in coats, hats, gloves, etc.) Here are the Outdoor Recess Guidelines that are published in the CCPS Parent Handbook: If the outside temperature is 32-35°F, elementary schools are encouraged to limit outdoor recess. The judgment of the school staff members is, however, the ultimate guide. They should be sensitive to weather conditions such as wind, overcast skies, relative humidity and precipitation and their effect on how cold it feels to be outside. As important as the other conditions, students must be dressed for the weather.

*Lost & Found: If you haven’t already, stop by the “Lost & Found” in the cafeteria! There are several coats and sweatshirt that have been found!
