Winterpock Weekly Update - 12/3/17

posted Dec 3, 2017, 4:06 PM by Laura Prymak
Hi Winterpock Families! Happy December! It was so nice to see so many of you at our PTA Holiday Shop on Friday evening! Last week, our third graders proudly shared their Gift of Writing and we crowned Ms. Oddo’s class as the Box Tops Champs! If you follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal), you can see photos highlighting our #WPESwolves! Week thirteen was terrific! We look forward to a fantastic week fourteen of school with your children!

Here is the weekly update:

*5th Grade Winter Musical: Our 5th graders will perform their Winter Musical on Thursday, Dec. 7th. Four classes (A. Collins, Frey, Hairston, & Papiernik) will perform at 6:00 p.m. These students will need to report to the gym at 5:45 p.m. The other four classes (Bailey, Loya, Oddo, & Smith) will perform at 7:15 p.m. These students will need to report to the gym at 7:00 p.m. We hope that having two performances will provide plenty of seating and will assist with parking! We are excited to see them perform!

*Polar Express Event by Manchester High School FFA Chapter: A senior at Manchester High School, who also represents the CTC @ Hull's FFA Chapter as the Vice President, asked for us to share this information with you! They are hosting a movie night at the CTC @ Hull in order to raise some money for their organization. They will be playing Polar Express. There will be refreshments and activities. The cost of $5 grants each person admission, popcorn, and a drink. There will be opportunities to buy goodies made by the Baking and Pastry program to support them as well. To make it more fun for the kids, it is also a pajama night! The movie night will be held on Wednesday, December 13th at 6:30 p.m. See the attached flyer. FFA holiday movie (2).jpg

*ADDED School Spirit Day: On December 15th, we will have Pajama Day! (We already planned on having one in January…and we will still do this!) We know how much our students love Pajama Day, so we wanted to give them a special surprise before the break! Please ensure that your children follow the school dress code and wear appropriate shoes to and from school. Thanks!

*STEAM Update: Attached you will find a newsletter from Mrs. Prymak and Mrs. Simpson. See what our students learned in November! Also, you will see an attached flyer regarding a special STEAM Family Day on Saturday, January 13th from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Science Museum of Virginia. Thanks for continuing to support our STEAM Lab! November STEAM Newsletter (2).pdf STEAM Family Day.pdf

*Important ARRIVAL Information: Thank you for your help with keeping our students safe in the morning! Please remember to keep your children in your vehicles until 8:05 a.m. as we do not have staff available to monitor them until that time. A huge THANK YOU to all of you for using only the right lane to access parking lots!

Please remember to drive all the way to the signs that say “Stop Here” in the morning when you are accessing the parent “drop off” loop. Believe it or not, we have approximately 200 cars that access the parent loop! When you stop in front of the main entrance of the school instead of pulling forward, it backs up the loop. Also, we kindly ask for all parents to stay in their vehicles in the morning. If you need to assist your child in exiting your vehicle, please consider waiting in line until you can safely access the small parking lot on the right. You can loop around in this lot, exit your vehicle to guide your child to the sidewalk, and then exit the parking lot without having to go around the big loop. We are trying everything we can to make our morning arrival efficient and safe!

Mrs. Malcolm and I will continue to assist with the flow of traffic in the morning…and to prevent cars from driving into the wrong lane around the median. We love greeting you each morning and appreciate you helping us keep everyone safe!

*Winterpock Reading Challenge: During Week Twelve, we read 41,835 minutes! It was only a two-day week! Our official total after twelve weeks is 981,631 minutes read as a school! I’m pretty confident that we will reach our goal when we look at unofficial totals from Week Thirteen tomorrow! Please continue to write the total number of minutes read in the “total minutes” column and initial. Teachers will continue to log total minutes into our school spreadsheet on Mondays. Spirit sticks will be awarded to students that read 1,000 (or more) minutes during the entire Reading Challenge. The top readers in each class will duct tape Mrs. Dubiel to the wall after the 100th day of school!

*Lost & Found: If you haven’t already, stop by the “Lost & Found” in the cafeteria! There are several coats, sweatshirts, and lunchboxes that have been found! We will donate unclaimed items in December before Winter Break.

*Aluminum Can Tabs: Our K-Kids will start collecting aluminum can tabs soon! Start collecting now to help them raise money for the Ronald McDonald House of Richmond!

*Café Sign-up: Many thanks to our volunteers from last week! We love having parent volunteers during lunchtime! We have several slots left for Monday through Friday this week. Please go here to sign up. (Click on “sign up” to access the “SignUpGenius” link.)
