Winterpock Weekly Update - 12/31/17

posted Jan 1, 2018, 8:22 AM by Laura Prymak
Hi Winterpock Families! Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season with your family and truly enjoyed your winter break! We’ve got one more day to prepare for our return back to school on Tuesday, January 2nd! I am excited to see everyone in 2018 and look forward to visiting all classrooms on Tuesday to welcome our #WPESwolves back to school! If you follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal), you will see photos highlighting our Wolfpack throughout the week! Week fifteen was fun! We look forward to a super week sixteen of school with your children!

Here is the weekly update:

*No School: There will be no school on Monday, January 1st. We look forward to welcoming our Wolfpack back to school on Tuesday, January 2nd!

*Important ARRIVAL Information: Mrs. Malcolm and I will continue to assist with the flow of traffic in the morning…and to prevent cars from driving into the wrong lane around the median. We love greeting you each morning and appreciate you helping us keep everyone safe! (You may not recognize us this week as we bundle up for the frigid temperatures!)

Thank you for your help with keeping our students safe in the morning! Please remember to keep your children in your vehicles until 8:05 a.m. as we do not have staff available to monitor them until that time. A huge THANK YOU to all of you for using only the right lane to access parking lots!

Please remember to drive all the way to the signs that say “Stop Here” in the morning when you are accessing the parent “drop off” loop. Believe it or not, we have approximately 200 cars that access the parent loop! When you stop in front of the main entrance of the school instead of pulling forward, it backs up the loop. Also, we kindly ask for all parents to stay in their vehicles in the morning. If you need to assist your child in exiting your vehicle, please consider waiting in line until you can safely access the small parking lot on the right. You can loop around in this lot, exit your vehicle to guide your child to the sidewalk, and then exit the parking lot without having to go around the big loop. We are trying everything we can to make our morning arrival efficient and safe!

*Core Value Breakfast: We look forward to recognizing our November Core Value students on Friday, January 5th at 7:45 a.m. Many thanks to our PTA for providing the breakfast!

*MSiC Enrichment Program: See the attached flyer for information on “Little Innovators” (Grades K-3). This is an additional opportunity for your children to explore STEM! Applications received by January 5th for “Little Innovators” will receive priority! Little Innovators Brochure 2018.pdf

*STEAM Update: Attached you will find a newsletter from Mrs. Prymak and Mrs. Simpson. See what our students learned in December! Thanks for continuing to support our STEAM Lab! Winterpock_December STEAM Newsletter.pdf

*STEAM Family Day: See an attached flyer regarding a special STEAM Family Day on Saturday, January 13th from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Science Museum of Virginia. It will be fun! STEAM Family Day.pdf

*Winterpock Reading Challenge: During Week Fourteen, we read 63,218 minutes! Our official total after fourteen weeks is 1,146,871 minutes read as a school! Yes, we exceeded our goal and the top readers in each class will duct tape me to the wall in mid-February! Let’s see how many more minutes we can read during the final seven weeks of the challenge. Please continue to write the total number of minutes read in the “total minutes” column and initial. Teachers will continue to log total minutes into our school spreadsheet on Mondays. Spirit sticks will be awarded to students that read 1,000 (or more) minutes during the entire Reading Challenge. So far, 416 students in grades K-5 have met this goal! Woohoo!

*Aluminum Can Tabs: Our K-Kids are collecting aluminum can tabs! Keep collecting them to help raise money for the Ronald McDonald House of Richmond!

*Café Sign-up: Many thanks to our volunteers from last week! We love having parent volunteers during lunchtime! We have several slots left for Tuesday through Friday this week. Please go here to sign up. (Click on “sign up” to access the “SignUpGenius” link.)
