Winterpock Weekly Update - 11/5/17

posted Nov 5, 2017, 3:15 PM by Laura Prymak
Hi Winterpock Families! Last week was busy as we finished up the first quarter of the school year! We held our first “K-Kids” Meeting, participated in several pumpkin activities, celebrated our October Core Value students, and had our first “Parade of States!” If you follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal), you can see many examples of student engagement in our classrooms and a video of our 5th Grade CBG students presenting their “Parade of States.” Week nine was fantastic! We look forward to a terrific week ten of school with your children!

Here is the weekly update:

*Important ARRIVAL Information: Thank you for your help with keeping our students safe in the morning! Please remember to keep your children in your vehicles until 8:05 a.m. as we do not have staff available to monitor them until that time. A huge THANK YOU to all of you for using only the right lane to access parking lots! Mrs. Malcolm and I will continue to assist with the flow of traffic in the morning…and to prevent cars from driving into the wrong lane around the median. We were excited that cars could access both parking lots using the right lane by 8:10 a.m. even after waiting in line in the right lane! We love greeting you each morning and appreciate you helping us keep everyone safe!

*Important DISMISSAL Information: Children that are picked up daily or consistently on certain days (i.e. every Tuesday or every Monday & Friday) obtain a number tag from the office and access the parent car loop. Their children go to the gym after school and we dismiss them from this location. We are happy to inform you that we are able to “roll” approximately 75 cars through the parent car loop by 3:00 p.m. each day! If you are picking up your child at dismissal time…and this is not your regular routine and you do not have a number…please send a note to your child’s teacher. Please wait in the car line until you can safely access either parking lot. Your child will be waiting for you to sign them out in the office. Thank you!

*Parent-Teacher Conference Day/No School for Students: Parent-Teacher Conference Day will be on Monday, November 6th. Our teachers are excited to meet with you about your children! There is no school for students on Monday, November 6th or Tuesday, November 7th.

*Veterans Day Program/Wear Red, White, & Blue: Our 2nd grade students will perform a Veterans Day Program on Friday, November 10th. Let’s all wear red, white, and blue to observe this special day!

*Winterpock Reading Challenge: During Week Eight, we read 76,252 minutes! Our official total after eight weeks is 708,157 minutes read as a school! We are almost three-quarters of the way to our goal in just eight weeks! Please continue to write the total number of minutes read in the “total minutes” column and initial. Teachers will continue to log total minutes into our school spreadsheet on Mondays. (Minutes will be logged on Wednesday this week!) WAY TO GO!

*STEAM Update: Attached you will find a newsletter from Mrs. Prymak and Mrs. Simpson. See what our students learned in October! Thanks for continuing to support our STEAM Lab! October STEAM Newsletter (1).pdf

*Aluminum Can Tabs: Our K-Kids will start collecting aluminum can tabs soon! Please see the attached flyer. Start collecting now to help them raise money for the Ronald McDonald House of Richmond! 2017-18 Can Tabs.pdf

*Café Sign-up: Many thanks to our volunteers from last week! We love having parent volunteers during lunchtime! We still have slots available for Wednesday through Friday this week. Please go here to sign up. (Click on “sign up” to access the “SignUpGenius” link.)

*Scholastic Reading Counts: In November 2016, CCPS issued a request for proposals (RFP) for web-based applications to support elementary literacy. During October 2017, approved providers were awarded contracts and schools were notified of the approved list. Schools seeking for-cost elementary literacy applications, regardless of funding source, are required to purchase from the list of approved providers. Scholastic Reading Counts is no longer an approved provider and our subscription ends on January 15, 2018. Mrs. Witham is exploring other approved literacy applications and, with the support of the PTA, we will have other programs available for our students to utilize once SRC expires.

Mrs. Witham will host a final Reading Counts store in January/February. She has also adjusted the goals for medals to make them attainable: 3rd grade- 50 points for a bronze medal, 100 points for a silver medal, and 150 points for a gold medal; 4th grade- 75 points for a bronze medal, 150 points for a silver medal, and 225 points for a gold medal; 5th grade- 100 points for a bronze medal, 200 points for a silver medal, and 300 points for a gold medal. (She arrived at these totals by dividing the total number of points currently needed by the number of months Reading Counts was available. We are losing 4 of the 8 months Reading Counts is available during the school year.) A Reading Counts Awards Ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Friday, February 2, 2018. We will keep you posted on other literacy applications that will be provided for your children!

*College & Career Readiness Month: November is College and Career Readiness Month across the county! Our school counselors will provide career-themed classroom guidance lessons in K-5 throughout the month. Career and college facts will be read over the announcements, select STEAM classes will have guests from VCU who will present about their STEAM-related careers and research, and a Career Wax Museum will be presented by students for selected classes on Wednesday, December 6th. Many thanks to Ms. Cox, Mrs. Delaney, and many of our staff members for providing our students with engaging activities throughout the month!
