Winterpock Weekly Update - 10/8/17

posted Oct 8, 2017, 3:15 PM by Laura Prymak
Hi Winterpock Families! Last week, we welcomed October with sunshine and a smile! If you follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal), you can see that we had fun learning in music, art, guidance, and STEAM! A special thank you to our PTA for helping us celebrate our September Core Value students last Friday! We look forward to a spectacular week six of school with your children!

Here is the weekly update:

*A Change to Dismissal for the Parent Car Loop: We currently have about 100 students that are picked up in the car loop in the afternoon. These children line up in the kindergarten hallway and there just is not enough space! Beginning tomorrow, Monday, October 9th, all “every day” car riders will go to the gym. We will dismiss them from the gym doors. This will not change our process at all! We will still have you pull all the way up to the sign around the loop! There will be several staff members to assist with calling numbers and loading your vehicles. Thanks for your patience over the next few days as we try to prefect this process! Students that are picked up by parents on occasion will still report to the main office.

*Winterpock Reading Challenge: During Week Four, we read 88,275 minutes! Our official total after four weeks is 346,039minutes read as a school! I definitely see duct tape in my future! I must say that I laugh when your children warn me that they are going to tape me to the wall! So funny! Please continue to write the total number of minutes read in the “total minutes” column and initial. Teachers will log total minutes into our school spreadsheet on Mondays. We are thrilled about the reading energy!

*Café Sign-up: Many thanks to our volunteers from last week! We love having parent volunteers during lunchtime! We still have slots available for Monday through Friday this week. Please go here to sign up. (Click on “sign up” to access the “SignUpGenius” link.)

*Get ready to say, “Cheese!” Fall Picture Day is Wednesday, October 11th.

*”K”-Kids for Grades 3-5: Winterpock is excited to offer a new club to our third, fourth, and fifth graders! We are transitioning from our former Student Council Association to K-Kids! This will allow us to provide more leadership opportunities for our students!
  • K-Kids is a “student-led” community service organization that operates under school regulations and draws its members from the student body, grades 3-5. A Kiwanis club in Midlothian, composed of like-minded, service-oriented people from the community, serves as the club’s sponsor. Teachers and Administration serve as the coordinators.
  • K-Kids develops caring leaders! Objectives are to provide opportunities for working together in service to school and community, to develop leadership potential, to foster the development of strong moral character, and to encourage loyalty to school, community, and nation.
  • Students who choose to join K-Kids may serve as an officer if elected. Members of the club will vote to elect: Sergeant-at-Arms, Treasurer, Secretary, Vice President (4th grader), and President (5th grader).
  • K-Kids will meet once a month on a Monday after school.
  • Go here for more information about K-Kids.
  • An application will come home with all 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders on Thursday, October 12th. Applications are due on Monday, October 16th by 8:30 a.m. We are excited to bring this new opportunity to our Wolfpack!

*Winterpock Field Days are Tuesday, Oct. 17th (Grades K-1 from 9:00-10:45 a.m.) and Wednesday, Oct. 18th (Grades 4-5 from9:00-11:00 a.m. and Grades 2-3 from 12:15-2:15 p.m.). Go here to sign up to assist with an event. (Click on “sign up” to access the “SignUpGenius” link.) We are in need of several more volunteers! There are a couple spots left for grades K-1 and several spots available for grades 2-5. Mr. Baytop and Mr. Jones really appreciate your support with this event!

*A Message from our School Counselors: October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Mrs. Delaney and Ms. Cox, our wonderful school counselors, are having a great time getting to know your children! Attached is an update from them that includes their lesson focus for October and contact information. Counselor Corner October 2017.pdf

*A Message from our Library: Mrs. Witham and Mrs. Robinson wanted to remind you about the Winterpock Wolfpack Library Birthday Book Program! See the attached flyer if you would like to participate. Many thanks! Birthday Book.pdf
