Winterpock Weekly Update - 10/7/18

posted Oct 7, 2018, 3:08 PM by Laura Prymak
Hi Winterpock Families! Last week, we completed our classroom family meetings! 49 classrooms in 4 weeks! Whew! It was so much fun! We are so fortunate to have such amazing students and teachers! Follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal) to see photos highlighting our #WPESwolves throughout the week! We look forward to a sensational week six of school with your children!

Here are a few updates and reminders:

*Arrival & Dismissal Update: Thank you for your patience as we continue to problem solve how to meet everyone’s needs! In the morning, during arrival, we will continue to begin unloading the car loop at 9:05 a.m. (Most parents are waiting to arrive until 9:10-9:15 a.m. which helps to keep our line shorter and more fluid!) Thank you for stopping at the white sign once the car loop is full. Please continue to drive straight down Harpers Mill Parkway and safely U-turn (at the end of the road) to access the car line from the other side. Please do NOT block the entrances to any of the side streets in the neighborhood including Glen Royal, Forge Gate, Petherwin, Highmarker, or Herton Cross. We need to allow for buses to safely access the left turn lane and bus loop. If you attempt to access the school via the left turn lane after 9:05 a.m., a staff member will kindly guide you to make a U-turn and wait in the line. This will prevent you from driving into oncoming traffic or the bus loop.

In the afternoon, at dismissal, please continue to wait in the car line. Pull up as far as you can in the car loop. Please wait at the white sign once the car loop is full. Cars that need to access the parking lots can do so until 3:50 p.m. After 3:50 p.m., all cars attempting to drive around the car line to access the school will be asked to U-turn and wait in the line. Again, this will prevent you from driving into oncoming traffic. A security guard will be stationed in the road daily by the white sign to direct traffic beginning tomorrow. This will allow for me to safely write down car numbers! All car riders will need to be picked up by 4:00 p.m. (Yes, we have gotten very efficient! Thanks for your help with this!)

I am no longer allowed to stand in the road on Harpers Mill Parkway. Thank you for continuing to follow the procedures that we have put in place to allow all of you to get to school safely! We recognize that we do not have the perfect solution for everyone, but will continue to try our best!

*Fall Picture Day: Fall Picture Day is Wednesday, October 10th. Fall pictures are a pre-pay format. You can pay online prior to picture day and/or send in a check on picture day. All students will have their pictures taken today regardless of whether they pre-paid for them! No proofs will be sent home with fall pictures. (We did not want you to think that you would get a proof and could order at that time.) The order form does notate that you can still place an order after picture day by emailing customerservice@candidcolor.net. You can also call 1-800-321-4256 for assistance. In case you didn’t know, school photography is a school fundraiser and we will get credit for purchases made on or before Picture Day. Make-up/Retake pictures will be available on Wednesday, November 28th. If you need an additional order form, please contact the school office at (804) 763-5051. In the spring, all students are photographed and proofs are sent home for you to view prior to ordering. We will send reminders home closer to that time-frame.

*Early Release Day: Friday, October 12th is an Early Release Day! The first dismissal bell will be at 12:45 p.m. (This is when we will begin dismissing our car loop.) Lunch times are adjusted on this day, and most students will eat in their classrooms. There are ten minute windows where students will access the cafeteria line by grade level between 10:55 a.m.-12:10 p.m. to ensure that all students have an opportunity to purchase lunch. (Classrooms that have students that eat at the peanut free table at lunch will eat in the cafeteria on this day at their adjusted times.) We kindly ask that visitors not join us for lunch on this day. It can be a little hectic! Thank you!

*Gifted/Talented Referral Deadline Approaching for Grade 5: The Gifted/Talented Referral Deadline for Grade 5 is Monday, October 15th. Please talk to your classroom teacher and/or contact the school office if you have any questions.

*Vocelli’s Adopt-a-Community: We are so excited that Vocelli’s Pizza has adopted Winterpock for the month of October! 2% of the sales for the month of October from the Deer Run location will be donated to our school to support students and teachers! Encourage your friends and family to eat at Vocelli’s (12040 Southshore Pointe Drive, Midlothian, VA 23112) during October! Adopt-a-Community-Flyer-Winterpock.pdf

*A Message from Mrs. Prymak & Mrs. Simpson about STEAMmania: STEAMmania is an event sponsored by Chesterfield County Public Schools. It is a day of challenges, learning, and fun centered on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Students will work in teams during on-site challenges to solve a problem using the knowledge of two or more STEAM contents. Each elementary school is able to bring a limited number of students to participate in this event. Students will be selected based on their ability to work together as a cooperative and collaborative team member. Attached is the STEAMmania Interest Form. It is due before Thursday, October 18th. *A Message about Field Day from Mr. Baytop & Mr. Jones: Hi Winterpock Families! It is time for Field Day! To make Field Day happen, and to keep it running smooth, Winterpock PE Teachers, Mr. Baytop and Mr. Jones, need your help! Volunteers will oversee games and help with set-up/clean-up. Please remember we only have room for volunteers at this event. No spectators, please. Activities will be in the gym, outdoor field, and bus loop. If certain games do not have volunteers, there may be volunteer post changes to make sure all activities are covered properly. Volunteers need to report to the school gym 15-20 minutes prior to the start of Field Day.

Here is the schedule for Field Day:

Grades K-1 - Tuesday, October 16th - 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
