Winterpock Weekly Update - 10/27/19

posted Oct 27, 2019, 3:14 PM by Laura Prymak

Hi Winterpock Families!  Can you believe how warm the temperatures are outside?!!  We hope that you are having a fun weekend!  If you follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal), you will see that we celebrated Ms. Husick as our Winterpock Elementary 2020 Teacher of the Year and Mrs. Godfrey as the Matoaca Elementary 2020 Teacher of the Year along with other photos highlighting our #WPESwolves last week!  Dressing up as their favorite book characters was a huge hit on Friday!  We look forward to a noteworthy week nine of school with your children!

Here are a few updates and reminders:

*College & Career Readiness Month:  November is College and Career Readiness Month across the county!  Help us celebrate “Winterpock Goes to College Day!” on this Friday, November 1st, by wearing your favorite college gear!  (I’ll definitely be supporting JMU on this day!  Go DUKES!)  Our school counselors will also provide career-themed classroom activities for K-5 Pack Meetings throughout the month.  Many thanks to Ms. Cox, Mrs. Delaney, Mrs. Murray, and many of our staff members for providing our students with engaging activities throughout the month!

*A Message from Mrs. Prymak & Mrs. Simpson about STEAMmania:  We were extremely pleased to have a high level of interest in representing Winterpock at the Chesterfield County’s 2020 STEAMmania competition.  We received over 175 applications!  Our STEAM committee has selected students based on their ability to work together as cooperative and collaborative team members.  Each elementary school is able to bring a maximum of 32 kindergarten-second grade students and a maximum of 32 third grade-fifth grade students to participate in STEAMmania.  We are proud to say that Winterpock will have a team competing in each event!  Students selected to participate in STEAMmania will receive notification letters this Tuesday, October 29th.  We regret that we cannot take more students and will keep you informed of future STEAM opportunities!

*Vocelli’s Adopt-a-Community:  We are so excited that Vocelli’s Pizza has adopted Winterpock again for the month of October!  2% of the sales for the month of October from the Deer Run location will be donated to our school to support students and teachers!  Encourage your friends and family to eat at Vocelli’s (12040 Southshore Pointe Drive, Midlothian, VA 23112) during October!  There are only a few days left in October!  Mrs. Malcolm, Ms. Parnell, and I will be at Vocelli Pizza on Tuesday night, October 29th from 5:00-7:00 p.m., and would love to see you!

*Reminder about Traffic Pattern:  Thank you for stopping at the white sign by the baseball field if the car loop is full in front of the school.  Cars can access the left turn lane to drive around the car line before 9:05 a.m. in the morning and before 3:55 p.m. in the afternoon.  If you arrive after 9:05 a.m. or 3:55 p.m., you cannot safely access the parking lots and must wait in line.  Please be prepared to make a U-turn and go back to Harpers Mill Parkway to access the car line if it is after 9:05 a.m. or 3:55 p.m.  There is no safe way to access the parent loop or parking lots after 9:05 a.m. or 3:55 p.m. except for the car line on the right-hand side.  Thank you again for helping us keep everyone safe!

*Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 3rd.  Set your clocks back one hour!

*A Message from Mrs. Robinson & Mrs. Witham:  Greetings from the Library!  We are excited to let you know that students who have purchased a November Birthday Book will come to the library on Friday, November 22nd to celebrate in our Birthday Book Club.  If you have not sent in a form yet and would like to participate, there is still time!  Please turn in the attached form on or before Monday, November 18th if you would like for your child to participate in the November Birthday Book Celebration.  Even if you pay online, please still send in the attached form.  Thanks for your support!  WPES Birthday Book Program.pdf

*A Message from our K-Kids:  Winterpock's K-Kids are continuing to collect pop tops (can tabs). They will be collecting them through June!

*Change in Child’s Afternoon Transportation:  THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!  If there is a change in your child’s afternoon transportation, please send a written note to his/her teacher.  Please use the attached note.  (This is a different form that last year!  It is easier to fill out!)  Notes will be sent to the office in our daily classroom folders.  If an emergency arises during the day and you need to make a change to afternoon transportation, please call the office at (804) 763-5051.  Emails will not be accepted for any transportation changes.  We also kindly ask that you please do not make changes after 3:15 p.m.  This will help us get everyone to the correct place!  Winterpock Dismissal Change Note 2019.pdf

*Winterpock Absence Excuse Form:  Please document your child's absences by completing our Google Form.  The link to the form is attached here and available in the “Resources” tab of our school website.  If you have any questions regarding this form, please contact our school office at (804) 763-5051.
