Hi Winterpock Families!  I hope that you are having a wonderful weekend with your family!  Last Friday, we had so much fun seeing all 1,275 students participate in their grade level Glow Run!  We look forward to seeing your child and his/her MVP for breakfast this week!  If you follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal), you can see photos highlighting our #WPESwolves throughout this week.  We look forward to a terrific week twelve of school with your children!

Here are a few updates and reminders:

*PTA MVP Breakfast:  This week, November 18th-22nd, our PTA will host a special MVP Breakfast each morning at 8:45 a.m.  See the attached flyer for more details!  Also, more volunteers are needed to make this event amazing!  Sign up here if you can help!  PTA MVP Breakfast November 2019.pdf

*No School for Students November 25th-29th:  There will be no school for students on Monday, November 25th (Office Hours – 11:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.) or Tuesday, November 26th (Office Hours – 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.) due to Parent-Teacher Conferences.  School will be closed for staff and students on Wednesday, November 27th through Friday, November 29th.  (I will not send a Sunday email on November 24th.  Look for my next Sunday email on December 1st!)

*School-Wide Reading/STEAM Challenge:  We are excited that our STEAM Team and our Reading Team have joined forces to create dynamic learning opportunities for your children this week!  Mrs. Prymak, Mrs. Simpson, Mrs. Trimble, and Mrs. Dyson are finishing up the final touches for a "School-Wide" Reading/STEAM Challenge on Friday, November 22nd!  All students will participate in activities throughout the week including this final challenge!  We need your help in providing supplies for all classrooms.  If you would like to donate balloons, permanent markers, card stock, yarn, foam sheets, or masking tape for your child's grade level, please click on the sign-up here.  Donations will be collected through Tuesday, November 19th!  Thanks for continuing to support our Reading Program and STEAM Labs!

*Boosterthon Update:  WOW!  We far exceeded our goal of raising $40,000 and the top two earners in each class will get to decorate me, Mrs. Malcolm, and Ms. Parnell tomorrow afternoon!  Our top earning class in each grade level with also get to slime the Boosterthon Team at the end of the day.  (We will video this for all students to see during their Pack Meetings on Tuesday!)  Boosterthon will be stopping by this week to hand out additional prizes that have been earned by our students.  Please let your child’s classroom teacher know if your child did not get a prize that they should have received.  I’ll let you know the final amount that was raised after my post-program meeting on November 25th.  THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THAT YOU DID TO SUPPORT THIS PROGRAM!

*Impact Aid Survey:  CCPS sent home an Impact Aid Survey with each student in late October/early November.  As you may remember from previous years, the Impact Aid Program replaces lost local funds due to federal activity.  Each year, parents are asked to complete a survey regarding parental membership in the armed forces and/or civilian personnel working for the federal government.  The data provided on these surveys determines supplemental funding levels provided to Chesterfield County Public Schools.  CCPS respectfully asks all families to complete the document, even if no federal employees live in the household.  Many thanks to those families that have already returned this form!  If you haven’t returned your survey yet, please send it in to your child’s teacher on or before Friday, November 22nd.  Thank you!

Hi Winterpock Families!  Last Wednesday was the beginning of the second quarter of the school year!  We celebrated our PTA Reflections participants and winners!  Our 2nd graders performed their Veterans Day Program on Friday.  It was so special to see them honor their loved ones!  If you follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal), you can see photos highlighting our #WPESwolves throughout this week.  We look forward to an energizing week eleven of school with your children!

Here are a few updates and reminders:

*PTA MVP Breakfast:  Next week, November 18th-22nd, our PTA will host a special MVP Breakfast each morning at 8:45 a.m.  See the attached flyer for more details!  PTA MVP Breakfast November 2019.pdf

*Report Cards:  Report Cards will come home on Friday, November 15th.

*CANVAS Access for Parents:  In January, you will receive an automated phone message from CCPS regarding a new “Learning Management System” called CANVAS.  Our school is in year one of implementation with this product and usage varies by grade level and classroom.  (There is more usage in grades 3-5 than in grades K-2.)  Feel free to go here to learn more about CANVAS and for information on how to set up your parent account as you will be able to access CANVAS in an “observer role” in the future.  Again, thank you for understanding that we are in year one of implementation with this new system and that many of our teachers will be transitioning from other systems to this new system throughout the school year at varied times.  We appreciate your support as we navigate new waters!

*A Message from Boosterthon:  Our #FunRun fundraising is underway!  Students now have a WEEKEND CHALLENGE!  If a student receives a total of $2 per lap in new pledges (or $60 in flat donations) over the weekend, they’ll receive a special #Boosterthon prize – a set of Quantum Rings!  Enter those pledges at funrun.com to qualify.  When we hit our goal of $40,000, the top students in each class will have a chance to decorate Mrs. Dubiel, Mrs. Malcolm, and Ms. Parnell!

We are a few days away from our Boosterthon Fun Run that will be on Friday, November 15th!  Currently, we are scheduled to have an indoor Glow Run for each grade level.  If the weather cooperates, we will move the event outdoors to the front field and will have four time-slots for outdoor Fun Runs (Tentative Schedule:  10:00-11:00 a.m. – 5th Grade, 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. – 4th Grade, 1:00-2:00 p.m. – Kindergarten & 1st Grade, 2:00-3:00 p.m. – 2nd Grade & 3rd Grade).  If we are able to move the event outdoors (fingers crossed!), we will need approximately 20 parent volunteers for each time-slot to help mark laps on t-shirts and hand out water.  Look for an email from me on Wednesday with final details and a volunteer sign-up sheet if needed!  Each student will receive a Winterpock Kindness T-Shirt for the Fun Run on Friday morning!

Winterpock Weekly Update - 11/3/19

posted Nov 3, 2019, 3:07 PM by Laura Prymak

Hi Winterpock Families!  We enjoyed seeing our students in their “college gear” on Friday and loved celebrating the many students and teachers that earned “Positive Pack” Office Referrals throughout the week!  Many thanks to our families that came to see us last Tuesday at Vocelli Pizza…and for all of you that supported our school throughout the month of October!  Follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal) to see photos highlighting our #WPESwolves!  We look forward to a terrific week ten of school with your children!

Here are a few updates and reminders:

*End of the 1st Marking Period: Monday, November 4th is the end of the first marking period!  This is a FULL day of school.

*Information Regarding Reading Levels and Assessments:  As we near the time for the first round of report cards and as you meet with teachers to conference about your child’s progress, we wanted to update you on the assessments that our teachers use to determine reading levels to inform instruction and report cards.  In the past, teacher’s used one system to report reading levels in grades K-2 (the Developmental Reading Assessment “DRA”) and predominantly one system to report reading levels in grades 3-5 (the Measures of Academic Progress “MAP”).  Now, we will be using multiple measures to inform instruction and report card leveling.  See the assessments listed by grade level below:

  • Kindergarten – Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) in Fall & Spring, Next Steps in Guided Reading Assessment (NSGRA) in Winter & Spring
  • First Grade – Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) in Fall & Spring, Next Steps in Guided Reading Assessment (NSGRA) in Fall, Winter, & Spring
  • Second Grade – Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) in Fall & Spring, Next Steps in Guided Reading Assessment (NSGRA) in Fall, Winter, & Spring, Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) in Winter & Spring
  • Third Grade, Fourth Grade, & Fifth Grade - Next Steps in Guided Reading Assessment (NSGRA) in Fall, Winter, & Spring, Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) in Fall, Winter, & Spring

As you can see, we are no longer using the DRA as an informal reading inventory at Winterpock.  Instead, we are using the NSGRA.  The NSGRA uses Dr. Jan Richardson’s “proven Assess-Decide-Guide teaching system to determine students’ reading levels and target instructional next steps.”  Levels for this system are reported in Fountas & Pinnell guided reading “letter levels” from A-Z versus numbers like the DRA.  A correlation chart is attached for you to review.  Teachers will also have this chart available at parent-teacher conferences as they explain your child’s progress.  So far, teachers are loving the efficiency of this new system and the more detailed comprehension results that they are receiving!  Again, with the use of multiple measures, we are able to obtain a more accurate instructional reading level for your child.  Reading Level Correlation Chart.pdf

We continue to be excited about the addition of our “extra” reading teacher this year!  Mrs. Trimble, Mrs. Dyson, and our PALS Tutor, Mrs. Harrell, are able to serve more students allowing for us to provide a “double dip” or two reading groups (one with the classroom teacher and one with our reading specialist) daily for many of our students.  Again, our classroom teachers look forward to sharing this information with you at conferences.  Thanks for your continued support as we continue to refine our practices to provide the very best reading “learning” opportunities for your children!

*NO School for students on Tuesday, November 5th.

*Veterans Day Program:  Our 2nd grade students will perform a Veterans Day Program on Friday, Nov. 8th.  Half of our classes will perform at 10:00 a.m. and the other half will perform at 10:45 a.m.  Splitting this performance into two will allow for everyone to have a seat!  We appreciate your patience as we help navigate parking between the two performances.

*A Message from Boosterthon:  We are a few days away from our Boosterthon Fun Run Kick-Off!  Stay tuned to hear what our students will get to do…to me…if we reach our goal!  (Last year, it was silly string!)  Pledging is now open.  The official Kick-Off will be November 6th and our Fun Run will be on November 15th!  See the attached flyer!  Each student will receive a free Winterpock “kindness” t-shirt for the Fun Run!  Thank you for your support!  Boosterthon 2019 - 1 Week Away!.pdf

*A Message from Mrs. Robinson & Mrs. Witham:  Greetings from the Library!  We are excited to let you know that students who have purchased a November Birthday Book will come to the library on Friday, November 22nd to celebrate in our Birthday Book Club.  If you have not sent in a form yet and would like to participate, there is still time!  Please turn in the attached form on or before Monday, November 18th if you would like for your child to participate in the November Birthday Book Celebration.  Even if you pay online, please still send in the attached form.  Thanks for your support!  WPES Birthday Book Program.pdf

Winterpock Weekly Update - 10/6/19

posted Oct 6, 2019, 3:45 PM by Laura Prymak

Hi Winterpock Families!  Last week, we completed our classroom family meetings!  52 classrooms in 19 days!  It was a fun adventure!  Your children are the BEST!  Many thanks for everything that you did to celebrate our Day Porters last Wednesday!  Mr. Dewayne, Ms. Jerald, and Ms. Gloria were so humbled and thankful for all of the kind gestures from our Wolfpack!  Follow me on Twitter (@WPESPrincipal) to see photos highlighting our #WPESwolves throughout this week!  We look forward to a sensational week six of school with your children!

Here are a few updates and reminders:

*Fall Picture Day:  Fall Picture Day is Wednesday, October 9th.  Fall pictures are a pre-pay format.  You can pay online prior to picture day and/or send in a check on picture day.  Each student will have his/her picture taken regardless of prepayment as these pictures will be included in the yearbook.  (More information on how to order a yearbook will be coming from PTA soon!)  No proofs will be sent home with fall pictures.  (We did not want you to think that you would get a proof and could order at that time.)  The order form does notate that you can still place an order after picture day by emailing customerservice@candidcolor.net.  You can also call 1-800-321-4256 for assistance.  In case you didn’t know, school photography is a school fundraiser and we will get credit for purchases made on or before Picture Day.  Make-up/Retake pictures will be available on Thursday, December 5th.  If you need an additional order form, please contact the school office at (804) 763-5051.  ***The following information is a CHANGE for this year!  Whole class pictures will not be taken this fall.  From now on, class photos will be taken in the spring along with an opportunity to take individual photos as well.***

*Early Release Day:  Friday, October 11th is an Early Release Day!  The first dismissal bell will be at 12:50 p.m.  (In order to access the parking lot for office parent pick-ups, please arrive prior to this time.)  Lunch times are adjusted on this day, and most students will eat in their classrooms.  There are ten minute windows where students will access the cafeteria line by grade level between 10:55 a.m.-12:00 p.m. to ensure that all students have an opportunity to purchase lunch.  (Classrooms that have students that eat at the peanut free table at lunch will eat in the cafeteria on this day at their adjusted times.)  We kindly ask that visitors not join us for lunch on this day.  It can be a little hectic!  Please send in a “Dismissal Change Note” in your child’s folder if your child’s afternoon transportation will be different due to the early dismissal.  Thank you!

*Transportation Update:  We are continuing to partner with Transportation to make positive changes to bus routes.  They will be on site this week!  Please refer to Mrs. Malcolm’s email that was sent around 3:00 p.m. today for information about a new routine for five buses.  Many thanks to all of the families that contacted VDOT!  They were on site at the traffic light last Friday in the morning and afternoon.  Hoping that the timing of the traffic light has improved!  Thanks for your continued support!

*Arrival Update:  Thank you for your patience as we continue to problem solve how to meet everyone’s needs!  In the morning, during arrival, we will continue to begin unloading the car loop at 9:05 a.m.  Thank you for stopping at the white sign once the car loop is full.  Please continue to drive straight down Harpers Mill Parkway and safely U-turn (at the end of the road) to access the car line from the other side.  Please do NOT block the entrances to any of the side streets in the neighborhood including Glen Royal, Forge Gate, Petherwin, Highmarker, or Herton Cross.  We need to allow for buses to safely access the left turn lane and bus loop.  If you attempt to access the school via the left turn lane after 9:05 a.m., a staff member will kindly guide you to make a U-turn and wait in the line.  This will prevent you from driving into oncoming traffic or the bus loop.

*Gifted/Talented Referral Deadline Approaching for Grade 5:  The Gifted/Talented Referral Deadline for Grade 5 is Tuesday, October 15th.  You can access additional information here.  Please talk to your classroom teacher and/or contact Kim Parnell, Assistant Principal/Gifted Coordinator, at kimberley_parnell@ccpsnet.net if you have any questions.  Thank you!

*A Message from our K-Kids:  Winterpock's K-Kids are continuing to collect pop tops (can tabs). Last year 89.3 lbs. were delivered to The Ronald McDonald House.  This year we have entered the School Pop Top Challenge to see which school in the RVA area will collect the most pop tops. To allow larger and smaller schools to compete equally, schools will compete to see who can collect the highest average pounds of pop tops per student!  We are already off to a great start! Let's surpass last year's collection and win this reward!!!

*Information from our Cafeteria:  A student meal costs $2.45.  The federal program that we have is “offer” versus “serve.”  In order for a lunch to be charged as a meal versus a la carte, a student must chose 3 of the 5 components and 1 of those components must be a fruit or vegetable.  The components are as follows: meat/meat alternative (cheese/yogurt Items), grain (bread/noodles/crackers), milk, fruit (may only get one), and vegetable (may choose two vegetables).  A complete meal is an entree, milk, 2 veggies and a fruit item (canned, fresh, or frozen, juice is offered twice a week).  If a student comes in and gets a chicken sandwich, milk, and chips, items are charged a la carte as the student did not get a fruit or veggie. If a student gets a chicken sandwich, milk, and a fruit or veggie, it is charged as a meal because it has 3 of the 5 components.  An adult lunch costs $3.55 with the same guidelines as a student meal.  An adult meal cannot be charged to a student’s account.  If an adult uses the student’s account, the items must be rung up as a la carte.  Adults can pay the meal price of $3.55 with cash at the register.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact Trica Magee, Cafeteria Manager, at trica_magee@ccpsnet.net.  Thank you!

*STEPP Information:  Success Through Education and Proactive Policing (STEPP) is an educational program for Chesterfield County elementary schools.  This program is a collaborative effort of the Chesterfield County Police Department and Chesterfield County Public Schools.  The program is taught by non-sworn, uniformed child safety officers in all county public elementary schools.  Course topics are based on grade level.  Additional lesson information can be accessed here
