Good evening Watkins families, this is your principal, Debbie Weatherford.

Thank you to all students, parents and community members that participated in International Walk 2 School Day on Wednesday. We had a huge crowd and it was a wonderful way to start the day!

Please join us for a community meeting about Old Hundred Elementary School on Wednesday  at 6:30pm, in the auditorium at Midlothian High School. All are welcome to attend.

A quick reminder to all JB Watkins parents: Yearbook sales are pre-order only at a cost of $20 through November 15th, with a price increase to $25 after that date.  Please see the Yearbook page on the PTA website for online ordering and easy upload instructions if you would like to submit photos of your children at JB Watkins events.

Our second Box Top collection is Friday, October 19th.  Clip your box tops and send them in with your child this week.

APEX FUN IS HERE!!!! The Apex Fun Run is right around the corner and the kids are very excited. This event is the PTA’s only major fundraiser and your support is what makes it a success. Families are invited to attend the event and we hope that you will join us in cheering on the kids and supporting them in their efforts. The run takes place on October 17th and 18th and the times for each individual grade are posted on the PTA website at jbwpta.com

The book fair is just around the corner and we are still seeking volunteers to make this a spectacular event. Our greatest time of need is the afternoon and evening of October 26th.  It takes many hands to get a book fair set up in two hours and to keep the purchase lines moving during the fair. Volunteer time-slots during the fair are only 30 minutes so that you can also enjoy the Pumpkin Lighting event with your child. Please click here if you are interested in volunteering.  We thank you for your support!

The book fair continues the week of 10/29-11/2 during the school day. Click here for additional details to find out your child’s library day and time to shop, setting up your child’s eWallet account, the Early Bird purchase date and times, and book fair tips.  We can’t wait to see you there!

We are excited to announce that we have four NEW spirit wear styles and they are now available for pre-order on the JBW PTA "Shop" website!

There are two color and logo options for sweatshirts and long sleeve Ts.  You may view and pre-order all spirit wear styles at http://jbwpta.com/shop/.  Secure payments are made through PayPal (PayPal account not needed). PLEASE be sure to add your teacher's name in the "Additional Information" section during checkout.

Sizing charts are listed for each style.  Please consult these charts, as some styles run small.  Because we offer spirit wear items at cost and only place what has been pre-ordered, we do not have additional inventory.  Therefore, we are unable to exchange items if the size that you ordered is incorrect.

Pre-orders for all styles will be available throughout the year on a rolling deadline schedule.  The current ordering period will close Friday, October 26th with delivery the week of November 12th.  Please note that this will be the only ordering period to purchase items for your holiday gift giving needs! Any orders after the October 26th deadline will be added to the next ordering period which will have a delivery after the new year.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at the address below.

 Thank you!

Parents, a few reminders about arrival and dismissal. During parent drop off in the morning, please don’t allow your child out of the car until our staff members are in place to receive them. At dismissal, please remember that we need all dismissal changes in writing. Also, after 3:40, parents will be directed to parent pick up to get their child. It’s critical during those last minutes of the day that the office staff is able to communicate with the transportation department and administration to ensure that all students are sent to the right place. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the administration team.

Be sure to follow us on Twitter @JBWatkinsES. Thank you for your continued support, we are looking forward to a fantastic week!

Good evening Watkins families, this is your principal Debbie Weatherford. Thank you so much to those families who were able to join us for Back to School Night this week.

As mentioned in previous updates, Chesterfield County Public Schools will utilize a revised gifted identification process to find and identify gifted learners this coming school year. Information sessions have been planned to provide interested parents of elementary and middle school students with more information regarding these changes. Feel free to join us on any of the following dates, noting that sessions cancelled due to the severe weather on September 17 have now been rescheduled: October 3 at 6:00 PM - Monacan HS auditorium

The first Chess Club of the school year is on Friday, October 5 and starts at 8:15am in the cafeteria. Any JBW student in any grade at any chess skill level is welcome to attend Chess club. The fee for attendance is $2 per session. A breakfast snack will be served. If you're available, Chess Club needs volunteers including those with Chess expertise to advise our players, especially available grandparents! Here is the signup link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0F4AABAD23A3FE3-jbwatkins

Here are a few reminders from the Gym Dudes:

  • CARDIO CLUB WILL BEGIN @ 8:45 THIS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3RD!  PLEASE REGISTER YOUR CHILD IF YOU CAN MAKE OUR MORNING EXERCISE CLUB!  MEET @ THE TRACK OR INSIDE GYM (Inclement Weather).

  • For those that will participate during our Walk 2 School Event on October 10th, please register and review the following pedestrian safety tips with your child.  Wear Watkins gear OR go Pink!

  • Watkins will soon implement a Safe Routes to School Program!  Students will have additional walking opportunities to improve fitness and our environment.  More information is coming soon!

 Hello W.H.O. And Watkins Families!

We are so excited about our upcoming year with W.H.O. (Watkins Helpers Organization). We have new events in addition to a few we enjoyed last year like ‘Duffels for Foster Children’ with Connecting  Hearts, S.P.C.A. field trip and ‘Lovey Blankets’ for ChildLife!! We meet about once a month to support a selected effort in the community. We’re hoping to meet lots of new families to share in our passion to give back.  Our goal is to teach kids the importance of sharing and empowering them to do so with their own hands and hearts!

Our first W.H.O. meeting will be this Tuesday October 2nd at 6:30p in the cafeteria at Watkins.  We’ll be making bracelets, pins and posters thanking blood donors attending the Blood Drive at Watkins October 8th from 3-7p. This is a great opportunity for kids to see that what they do can really make a difference!  We’ve had great participation in blood drives in the past and think that with the support of the kids’ gifts and encouragement that we’ll have even more success.

We’ve been so humbled seeing families support this effort-we’d love for you be a part of it and to see it, too!  Please email us at who@jbwpta.com with any questions or if you’d like to be included on our mailing list and we look forward to seeing you soon!!

We have all been seeing news coverage of the devastating flooding taking place in North & South Carolina, as a result of Hurricane Florence.  One of our new teachers, Mrs. Smith, was in touch with a fellow teacher in the Atlantic Beach, NC area and they’ve asked for our help. They plan to open the doors to their school on Tuesday but they have lost almost all of their school supplies.  With many families struggling to salvage and make repairs to their homes, worrying about school supplies isn't the highest on their list. That’s where we can help!! This Friday, for a minimum donation of a dollar per student, students can wear a hat of their choosing for the day.  These hat days are a great way for our kids to express their creativity and individuality AND raise money for a very important cause. The teacher from the affected school will send pictures of all of the supplies they are able to purchase with our donations so our students can see the good they are doing in the world.  Our students will also have an opportunity to send notes or cards to their friends in the south to offer them words of encouragement and support. Isn’t it wonderful that we have this opportunity to help others and practice showing kindness to a community in need. Thank you so much for your support of this effort!

Be sure to follow us on Twitter @JBWatkinsES.

Thank you for your continued support! We are looking forward to another great week!!

Good evening Watkins community, this is your principal Debbie Weatherford.

Tonight, I would like to start off by thanking you for your patience during a very challenging week last week with regards to transportation. I hope that you saw as the week progressed, that we made sure we communicated to you what was happening, as it was happening. I will continue to send emails and tweets regarding dismissal through this week. Another place you can look for up to date information is on our school website. Our Twitter page is linked there, so if you’d like, you can bookmark this page for real time notices too. It is my hope that we will continue to see progress with transportation this week.

Next, I’d like to thank the countless volunteers that came out to support staff and students last week. Whether it was for morning arrival, lunch duty or dismissal, our wonderful community stepped up to the task and we are extremely grateful. We even had folks come out to assist with dismissal that hadn’t previously signed up, as a result in some of the delays with buses and their willingness to want to lend an extra helping hand. Our office staff and teachers were also instrumental in keeping things running smoothly. If you’re not on Twitter, go to the school website and look at our Twitter feed to see all of the amazing things that were happening in classrooms last week.

One change that will go into effect immediately, is that after 3:40, if you need to pick up your child, you will be directed to go to the parent pick up area to do so. Often bus issues come up at the last minute, as a result of traffic or a student having to be returned to school on a previous route. Those last 15 minutes of the day need to be clear for the office staff to take calls from transportation, communicate needed changes to the admin team and assist with notifications to the community. We thank you in advance for partnering with us in this needed change and know that you will be cooperative if reminded to go to parent pick up after 3:40.

Speaking of parent pick up, a few reminders were sent out during the week. Please be sure to have your ID with you every day. It is school board policy that an ID is presented any time you sign a child out. Whether you come one day a year or every day, we are required to ask for this. Also, for parent pick up notes, please be sure to include your child’s last name, teacher and write legibly. This will save alot of time and confusion.

When a student is absent to please remember to send a note the day the student returns or email the teacher and cc our clinic assistant Ms. Leet at  Mary_Leet@ccpsnet.net. There is no need to call the school and leave a message.

From the PE Dudes, here is information about Cardio Club, International Walk 2 School Day and Fitness testing for 4th and 5th grades.

Cardio Club

4th & 5th grade fitness testing letter

Next, we have a reminder from Mrs. Jester. Summer learning portfolios should be turned in through Google classroom or on paper by September 14th.

Back to School Night for grades 4 and 5, will take place on Thursday, Sept. 13th, from 6-7:30. We will begin with an informative general session in the cafeteria that will cover a variety of topics. From there, you will be dismissed to meet with your child’s teacher for additional information.

Good evening Watkins community, this is your principal, Debbie Weatherford.

It was great to see so many of you at school on Friday, for kindergarten orientation and open house for grades 1-5! Students and parents alike were catching up about memories of the summer and getting ready for the new school year. Watkins was “the” place to be on Fridaymorning!

Thank you to the PTA, for helping in a variety of ways last week. Whether it was providing food to the teachers, sprucing up the grounds or cleaning classroom carpets, this group of folks was always there to lend a hand! We sure do appreciate the huge role you played in helping us get ready for the new school year.

As we finish final preparations for Tuesday, I have several reminders to share with you this evening.
  • Our opening bell will ring at 9:15 and the tardy bell at 9:25. At 3:55, the dismissal bell will ring. Students will be dismissed at that time to parent pick up, day-care vans and the YMCA. We will use the intercom system to dismiss to the bus loop.
  • Parent drop off is in front of the building and students will be permitted to go in all three doors. There will be staff out front to assist with this. Please do not get out of your car or leave your car unattended. Students should exit from the right hand side of the car. Also, do not go around the other cars in the line, as this poses a safety concern.
  • Breakfast will be served in our main cafeteria for students in grades K-5, beginning on Tuesday. If your student needs breakfast, they are to report to the cafeteria.
  • If your child will be on permanent parent pick up, please make sure you have filled out the information card. You may stop by the office on Tuesday, or arrive to parent pick up little bit early on Tuesday afternoon. Parent pick up location is the gym, and there will be several staff members there to assist you.
  • Kindergarten parents, please make sure your child wears their name tag every day for the first two weeks.
  • All students in grades K-2, have a color band to attach to their back pack. This band should have their name and dismissal plan on it. If you weren’t able to attend our events on Friday, your child will receive their band on Tuesday.
  • We are asking that parents refrain from joining us for lunch during the first 2 weeks of school, to allow us time to get routines and procedures in place with the students. You are welcome to join your child, beginning on September 17th.
  • Buses will most likely be running behind on Tuesday afternoon, as drivers learn which students get off at each stop and verify that there is an adult there to meet kindergarten students. We will send out a Tweet and message through our parent notification system, once the buses have left the school.

Please keep in mind that our office hours have changed, due to the change in school start time. The office will be open each day from 8:30-4:30.

Here are some important reminders regarding the YMCA program at Watkins. There are no longer any YMCA buses. That goes for the morning and afternoon. The program is housed here now. The program in the morning begins at 7:00 am. Parents should take their children to the doors leading into the gym area of the building. At dismissal time at the end of the day, YMCA students should report to the main cafeteria. They will be picked up there by the YMCA instructors and taken to the gym. At 6:30 pm, when the YMCA program ends for the day, parents will pick their students up at the gym doors.

Good evening Watkins community, this is your principal, Debbie Weatherford. I hope everyone is enjoying these last days of summer. We can’t wait to see everyone for Orientation and Open House at the end of this week.

Message from the PTA:

** Please remember memberships are only good for one school year. If you joined last year you will need to join again for the 2018-2019 school year.

Thank you so much!

Here is a list of some important dates that are coming up:

Friday, August 31st-Kindergarten Orientation-All KG students and parents are encouraged to come meet their teacher, visit the classroom, drop off supplies and learn about the Watkins experience. This event will begin promptly at 9:00am with a presentation in the cafeteria. From there, students and parents will move to classrooms.

Friday, August 31st-Open House for grades 1-5. All Watkins families are invited to come drop off supplies, meet their teacher, and catch up with old friends. This event will run from 10:30-12:00. Don’t feel that you have to be here right at 10:30, as this is an ongoing event and parking will be a challenge. You might want to come a little later in this window to avoid the early rush and the KG students who will be here earlier.

Tuesday, September 4th-First Day of School-The doors open at 9:15, be at the bus stop a little early that day, as it will be the first time buses will run their routes with students on them and the time might fluctuate a bit. Additionally, the buses will probably be a little late that afternoon, as earlier routes might take some additional time. I advise letting students ride the bus on the first day, if that will be their normal routine. More details will follow as opening day approaches.

Information regarding bus routes can be found by clicking this link. Updates are constantly being made, so be sure to check back again before school starts. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15etMDMCbxAFWFbU-JQijLU6nQFxEAmYmvXcPIFlcrA0/pubhtml?gid=0&single=true

Teacher assignments will be sent by email, on August 29th. Please look for this information after 5:00 on that date.

Kindergarten families, please make sure you have dropped off your child’s physical and immunization records if you have not done so. It would be helpful, if you take care of this task prior to orientation on August 31st.

Back to School Nights are scheduled for the following dates: September 13th, grades 4&5; September 20th, grades 2&3; September 27th, grades K&1. The event will take place from 6-7:30pm each night.

The main office will return to our normal hours this week of Monday-Friday, from 8:30-4:30. However, we will be closed on Monday morning for a few hours for our offsite opening staff meeting.

If you have not purchased school supplies, you can find the list on our website, as well as, in many of the local stores. You are also welcome to stop by the main office.

The main office will continue to operate on our summer schedule of Monday-Thursday from 7am-5pm through August 23rd. Beginning on August 27th, we will return to our regular schedule of Monday-Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm.
