Ms. Weatherford
Deborah Weatherford - Principal

Greetings, Coalminers!

I am Debbie Weatherford, your new principal at J.B. Watkins Elementary School. Here is a little information to help you get to know me. I look forward to building wonderful relationships with all of you this year!

I began my teaching career in Chesterfield County at Bensley Elementary. During my eighteen years in the classroom, I taught Junior Kindergarten, First and Third Grade at Bensley and Evergreen Elementary. From there, I spent three years, as Assistant Principal at Watkins Elementary. Then, I spent the past three years as Principal at C.C. Wells Elementary. I am very excited to return home to Watkins to serve as your next principal!

I attended Chesterfield County Public Schools and graduated from Midlothian High School. Then, I  received my Bachelor’s degree from Longwood College and my Master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.

In my free time, I enjoy being a mom to my wonderful children Casey and Hunter, spending time at the beach in Duck N.C., reading and shopping. I'm an avid runner and enjoy participating in half marathons. My family and I enjoy watching football and cheering for the New York Yankees

I am so excited to meet the parents and students of this wonderful community and look forward to a great school year. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time with questions, comments and concerns. Through our collaborative relationship, I know that exciting things are ahead this year for our students!

Karyn Andersen - Assistant Principal

This is my 25th year in education and I am proud to say that they have all been in Chesterfield County. I was a special education teacher, coordinator, and liaison prior to coming to Watkins. I received my Bachelors in Elementary Special Education from Longwood College and my Masters in Educational Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University.

My family is incredibly special to me. I have a wonderfully supportive husband of almost 22 years, two children 18 and 16, and a seven pound dog who thinks she’s a Great Dane. In my spare time, I love to run, sit on the beach, and spend time relaxing with my family.

J.B. Watkins is an amazing place to work! The staff is truly dedicated to the students and is eager to see all succeed. Everyone here believes that education is essential and students should be learning in a fun hands on approach. I am excited to work with Ms. Weatherford, Mr. Ondrish, all of the staff, and community to build J.B. Watkins to not only be good, but GREAT.

“If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.” —-John Dewey

Shawn Ondrish- Assistant Principal

I am excited to be joining J.B. Watkins this year. I grew up in the Pittsburgh area and moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia in 2002. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary/Middle School Education from California University of PA and my Master's Degree in Education Administration and Supervision from VCU. The 2017-2018 school year will be my 16th in education overall and in Chesterfield County Public Schools. I've taught 6th grade Social Studies (and two years of Science) for seven years at Salem Church Middle School and Carver Middle School. I became an administrator in 2009 and worked as the Dean of Students for two years at LC Bird HS. From there, I became the Administrative Assistant at Bailey Bridge MS, where I worked for two years. I most recently served as the Assistant Principal at Salem Church Middle, where I worked for the past four years.

I have been married to my beautiful wife, Meghan, for nine years. We have two wonderful and energetic boys, Owen (age 6 in July) and Leo (3 in July). In addition to spending time with my family, I enjoy reading, history, Steeler & Notre Dame football, Pirate baseball, and being a huge Star Wars fan.
