Reading Specialist

The role of the reading specialist is to provide additional support to students in Language Arts who did not meet the PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening) or the DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) benchmarks.  Students are placed in a small group of five to six students who have similar learning needs.  These groups work with the reading specialist or PALS tutor four to five days a week for thirty minutes each day.  Every effort is made to work with these groups in a classroom setting during the guided reading block of the classroom teacher’s schedule.  Skills such as identifying the alphabet, identifying sounds, rhyming, decoding, comprehension, and fluency are addressed during the 30 minute group sessions.
