RAIDER REPORT FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 28, 2018

posted May 29, 2018, 5:21 AM by joan_rucker@ccpsnet.net   [ updated May 29, 2018, 5:22 AM ]

It's Memorial Day and I certainly am grateful to those men and women who have given their lives for our country. I hope that you and your family were able to celebrate or at least pause to think about this ultimate sacrifice over the weekend.

Parents, this Friday (6/1) is the 8th Grade Formal Dance. Please remember that the dress code is in effect. Lengths of garments need to be at least mid-thigh and some sort of wrap should be worn if a dress has spaghetti straps or is strapless. While I'm on the topic, please remember that the dress code is in effect every school day until the end of the school year. Remember that rips, holes, tears, or frays are not allowed above the knee.

Click here for the latest newsletter from the CCPS Office of Family and Community Engagement.

All library books are due back by Friday, June 1, 2018. This allows the librarians time to collect all of the books returned and complete an inventory by the end of the year.If students have fines or lost books, these need to be taken care of before purchasing dance tickets (8th grade) or attending any end of the year parties. If you have any questions, please contact Donna Wilson or Marybeth Oliver: donna_wilson@ccpsnet.net or marybeth_oliver@ccpsnet.net
We are looking forward to sharing our Summer Reading plan with all of our students very soon. Thank you for your support of the library!

RAIDER REPORT FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 14, 2018

posted May 14, 2018, 5:14 AM by joan_rucker@ccpsnet.net   [ updated May 14, 2018, 5:22 AM ]

Happy Mother's Day! There should certainly be more than one day set aside for mothers. What an incredibly important job! I honestly don't know how you do it, but we're all extremely fortunate that you do. One huge "Thank you!" to all the mothers.

Parents -It is very important that all students bring their Chromebooks fully charged on Wednesday, May 16.  Every student (with the exception of a few paper testers) will be taking their Reading SOL on May 16.  They need to be ready to test at 8:30am. Thank you.

Many thanks to our PTA for helping us celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week by providing breakfast and lunch and some other goodies! We appreciate your incredible support. We also need to thank Better Homes and Gardens Base Camp Realty and Chesterfield Federal Credit Union for providing lunch for our teachers. You put the US in Robious.

End of the Year Medication Pickup.
Medications provided to the school clinic for your child must be picked up by the student's parent/guardian. Medications must be available for your student's use through the last day of school, which is June 15. From June 18-21, all remaining student medications, including over-the-counter medications, must be picked up at the school between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily. To pick up your student's medications, come to the school office and ask a staff member for assistance. Please be patient to assure all medications belonging to your student are returned to you.

The last day to purchase a yearbook is May 18.  There aren't many books remaining.  Please, make sure to get your book in time.  Go to www.jostens.com now.

If a student was absent on May, 4, a note should be sent in to the attendance office.

Thanks and have a great week!,

Are you interested in the Youth Aeronatical Education Foundation (YAEF).  The YAEF consists of both a flying program (students learn to fly and ultimately earn a private pilots license) and a Build  A Plane (BAP) program.
The BAP program is directed at middle (8th) and high schoolers.  Currently there is one CCPS high schooler in the program.  The flying program is focused on high schoolers who have an interest in learning how to fly single engine planes.
The other students in the program (both flying and BAP) hail from Hanover, West Point, New Kent, Williamsburg, Appomatox Regional Governor's School, Henrico, other school districts and home schooling.  Some of the districts are at the early stages of recognizing the program for credit.
The BAP program teaches many hands on technical skills as well as team work, communication, critical thinking and planning skills.  To give you an example, the students in the BAP begin by learning how to drill, unskin, debur, dimple, reskin and rivet air frames as well as how to read basic blue prints for a plane.   This skill set is equivalent to some of the vocational and trade related courses and skill sets that are taught in some programs.  Each step is meticulously taught and guided by certified aviation engineers, technicians and pilots so that the final assembled plane can pass all FAA requirements.
Interested student and parent meeting scheduled on May 8 at 6:00 PM to be held in the auditorium at CTC@Hull.

Congratulations to our Teacher of the Year, Ms. Ashley Arnone! This prestigious honor is well deserved as Ms. Arnone is a dedicated practitioner who is continually seeking methods to reach and challenge all of her students.

Congratulations to our Students of the Year, Ber van der Meer and Jacob Ceballos Vargas!

This week is National School Library Week! Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Oliver, and Mrs. Davidson do an outstanding job at making the Robious Middle library/media center a thriving hub of student activity and engagement.

The importance of school libraries:

Why it's important for kids to read:
We will have trivia questions each day on the morning announcements for students and they will have a chance to win prizes.
Book collection during April- we will be collecting for the Little Free Libraries in our area and VCU Massey Cancer Center. If you have any new or gently used books, please bring them to the library
April 17th-Award-winning author, Alan Gratz, will be visiting our school. He will do an assembly for 6th grade and 7th grade and also a meet and greet with students. (Refugeeis on the New York Times bestseller list!)

Congratulations to the following 8th graders for making the JV baseball team at James River High School:

Crum, Jack

Dail, Jonah

Hamilton, Reece

Rapp, Mark

Rowe, Jackson

Robious Middle School Visual and Performing Arts will be hosting a Family Art Night Fundraiser!  F.A.N. Because we're all fans of the Arts! Friday April 20th from    5 - 7:30
Mark your calendars...
The event includes: Artwork from visual arts students, a faculty art show, children's art activities, performances by choir and solo & ensemble groups, face painting, a community art project, meet & greets with our featured student artists and more...
Hope to see you there!

This coming Friday is the end of the marking period. Please check ParentVue and make sure that your child has turned in all assignments. Reach out to teachers if you have questions. Don’t wait until Thursday night to do so. Remember that students must pass all four core content classes and either their elective or PE to be promoted to the next grade level. Students can take only two classes in summer school. Your child does NOT want to go to summer school.

As we get closer to testing season, I would like to make sure you are all aware of the following resources. The first link takes you to SOL parent resources from Chesterfield and the second link takes you to Virginia Department of Education resources.

There are only around 200 yearbooks left!  However, over 700 students have yet to purchase one. Buy a yearbook now at jostens.com

If you permit your child to use social media, please, please, please, monitor what they are doing. Many of our young scholars do not realize that they are guilty by association simply by "liking" or "following" something that is inappropriate. Please stress with your child that they should never forward or send something that is questionable. If your child receives something that is inappropriate please let administration know. Here's an interesting article with some helpful suggestions:

RAIDER REPORT FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 5, 2018

posted Mar 5, 2018, 5:25 AM by joan_rucker@ccpsnet.net   [ updated Mar 5, 2018, 5:25 AM ]

Robious Middle, along with the rest of Chesterfield County Public Schools is participating in National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) this week.  It is a week to highlight and celebrate the benefits of breakfast and the opportunity for all of our students to receive a healthy meal at the start of their day. Fueling up at breakfast can boost attention, concentration, and memory, all of which helps our students in and out of the classroom. Lots of fun activities planned for next week including an opportunity to win a raffle prize for students who participate in school breakfast every day the week of March 5 through 9th.

8th Grade Parents:All 8th Grade students will be taking Writing SOL's on March 13 and March 15. Please make sure your child is on time, well rested, and full of a hearty breakfast.  Thank you.

Congratulations to Jack Knorr! He has qualified to compete in the state level competition of the National Geographic Bee!

On Saturday a delegation of 40 RMS French students attended the 20th annual Congrès that was held at Matoaca High School. 24 schools from the metropolitan Richmond area and other parts of the state participated. The RMS students did themselves proud and were a credit to the school community! French teachers Valerie Beausergent and Debbie Bartle are very proud of their students.

8th Grade Student/Parents who are interested in finding more about  HPE Online during the summer or next school year  are invited to hear more about the options on MARCH 14 at 5:00pm in the school library. This is often a choice for students who cannot fit the electives they want in  9th Grade.
There will also a short Q and A with the AP Human Geography teacher, Shannon Castelo, from James River at 5:30. If your rising 9th Grader is signed up for AP Human Geography or contemplating it, you may want to attend.

Click here for recent information on vaping. This is not allowed in school.

With the events in Florida and across the nation, it is imperative that everyone be vigilant. I strongly urge all students, staff, and parents to communicate information with school officials and local law enforcement. Parents are encouraged to monitor their child's social media posts and behavior closely. I trust that our incredible staff, student body, and community will report anything that helps ensure our learning community continues to be a great place to learn and work.

Counseling coordinator, Martha Turner, and I met with students this past week to hear their thoughts on how the victims of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School should be remembered and honored. They shared their ideas on what options should be available for students who want to honor the victims on March 14. I informed the students that no matter what optional activity they proposed, it would need to be safe, supervised, and structured. More information about this optional activity will be forthcoming this week.

RAIDER REPORT FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 26, 2018

Congratulations to the following RMS students who earned recognition at this year's CCPS Reflections Awards !:

Congratulations to the Raider Winter Guard for placing second in their class at the Atlantic Indoor Association circuit this past Saturday at Grassfield High School in Chesapeake, VA! More important than a trophy, the winter guard jumped 17 points in just two weeks from their last competition - a rarity in this circuit! Come out to support them one last time on Saturday March 17 at Atlee High School in Mechanicsville at their last competition of the season. Congratulations again ladies on your best performance yet!

The RMS National Junior Honor Society is collecting new socks for the homeless. Please consider purchasing some socks and donating them. NJHS will be delivering them to a homeless shelter.

Grab a sandwich and support the Sport of the Arts! Come out to Jimmy Johns inside Chesterfield Town Center this Thursday March,1 anytime between 5:00-:800pm. Just simply place your receipt in the “fish bowl” at check out and a portion of each order will help continue to fund the Raider Winter Guard!

All are invited to the next PTA Diversity Committee meeting. Click here for more information.

The following is a message from two students in the Leadership and International Relations Center at James River High School:
As part of the curriculum of the Leadership and International Relations Center at James River High School, a fellow student and I are building a special community-wide event as our Capstone Service Project. River Jam is an outdoor music and arts festival held at James River High on March 10, 2018 from 1-4 PM. We anticipate upwards of 800 attendees from our community.

More than 3,400 high schoolers attempt suicide every day in America. Our community suffers from this problem; last year, two fellow students from James River High School ended their lives. The proceeds from River Jam will benefit the Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation, which builds programs for teenage sufferers of mental illness and provides resources for suicide prevention.

Click here to see the flyer.

Your support of River Jam will directly impact the youth in our Chesterfield community by providing students with coping mechanisms, creating a positive campus culture, and Speaking Up about mental health.

An article about River Jam was published on a leading mental health site whose founder spoke at the 2018 National Mental Health Institute: https://annemoss.com/2018/01/27/james-river-students-seek-raise-awareness-teen-suicide/
River Jam has a billboard on I-95 and I-64 near the baseball diamond. Watch for Team River Jam on channel 8 news on March 5th at 9 AM and on CBS 6 on March 6th at 9 AM
