Fasten your seatbelt and prepare to enter the realm of the third grade curriculum!

Reading

As we read, we hone reading strategies we have acquired in previous years and focus on non –fiction articles and books. We gather in small fluid guided reading and novel groups. We continually search for the main idea whether concrete or inferred and ponder the difference between retelling and summarizing. We read to comprehend and enjoy various genres.

Writing

Our written expression centers on the 6+1 traits and we begin the year with a “snapshot” writing focusing on a single event much like peering through the lens of a camera. Throughout the year, the thesaurus becomes our best friend as we strive to enrich our descriptions and vividly share our thoughts. Even in non- fiction writing, we let our voices shine through.

Math

How many ways can you solve a math problem? Whether studying the concepts of greater addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, we are always attempting to find one more way to arrive at the answer. We learn from each other as most may arrive at the same conclusion, but by a different route. We continue to stress number sense, time, money geometry, measurement, data collection/graphing, fractions, and place value.

Social Studies

Social Studies find us traveling through the ages, from the ancients to modern times. We incorporate map skills as we discover the routes of the early explorers and the areas that surround us. We learn about government from the first democracy to present day. Economics finds us with a real world understanding of opportunity cost, specialization, and the resources that make products available for our wants and needs. We marvel at the contributions many made to create a country that countless want to call home while leaving their homelands behind.

Science

In science, we integrate the skills of scientific investigation, reasoning, and logic throughout all aspects of the curriculum. As we investigate simple and compound machines, energy, and matter, we gain a deeper understanding of physical science. We discover the wonders of the natural world as we explore animal adaptations, environments, resources, and conservation. The natural world also leads us to study patterns in nature such as the water cycle, phases of the moon, tides, seasonal changes, and animal life cycles.
