Teacher of the Year

Congratulations Nicole Rowland!
Providence Middle School Teacher of the Year 2019
CCPS Middle School Teacher of the Year 2019
CCPS Teacher of the Year 2019

I was born and raised in New York state and received my Bachelor of Science degree in 2004 from Syracuse University, where I double majored in Biology and Art History. Having a life long love of science and desire to make a difference, I applied and was selected for the Americorps program Teach for America out of college. I began my teaching career in Northeast Washington, DC, where I taught 6-8th grade science for 3 years while achieving my Masters degree in Teaching from American University. I married my college sweetheart, William Rowland in 2006 and shortly after, moved to Northern Virginia. In 2007 I began working as an 8th grade science teacher in Fairfax County Public Schools and taught in Alexandria, VA for the next 7 years. During that time, I achieved my Education Specialist degree from George Washington University, and had 3 wonderful children with my husband, Angela (8), Bennett (6), and Lucas (4).

My parents have lived in the Richmond area for the last 15 years, so in 2013 we moved to Chesterfield to be closer to family as our kids grow up. I spent a wonderful 2 years at home with my children after we moved, and began teaching for Chesterfield County in 2015. I have taught 6th grade science at Providence Middle School for the last 3 years and have enjoyed every minute of my time here! I was the winner of the Whack-a-Watt Challenge teacher prize in 2016, received Best Driving Question in the Chesterfield County PBL Challenge in 2016, and was the recipient of a Chesterfield Education Foundation MCD grant award in 2017, to establish a school-wide composting program for Providence. I have big plans to continue doing amazing things here at Providence Middle School for the foreseeable future!

Providence Middle School Teacher of the Year 2018

I was born in Nashua, NH, and ended up loving all New England sports (except the Patriots, Go Browns!).  I spent most of my time growing up in Northern Virginia and attended Elizabethtown College near Hershey, PA (it even smelled like chocolate some days!).  I was fortunate to be able to run throughout high school and at the Division III level in college.  You'll still find me running around PVMS and in some local races while also coaching the next generation of runners here at Providence.

After graduating college, I married my high school sweetheart and we settled down in Richmond, VA.  After teaching and coaching at the high school level in PA, I found myself enjoying middle school in a whole different way.  I've loved my time at Providence Middle School, it has always been a very special place and a great place to be able to teach.  The PVMS family has been very supportive as my family has grown with the births of our son and daughter.

Fun Fact: I hate Pandas.
