English / Language Arts

In English 6, 7, and 8 we strive to foster a love of reading and to practice strategies that increase comprehension skills. Students will learn to apply critical reading and reasoning skills through short stories and full length books.  Self-selected reading (SSR) is a requirement that allows students to improve their reading, vocabulary and writing through choice books.

Students will build on the foundation of writing skills developed in previous grades and continue to grow as proficient writers. Trait based writing instruction involves lessons and practice with; organization, word choice, sentence fluency, ideas, voice and conventions.
Students will continue the process of becoming independent  writers throught writer’s workshop.  Writer’s workshop may include mini-lessons from one of the traits, practice, peer revising, peer editing and teacher conferencing.  Students ultimately learn that their writing conveys a message to the reader.

Vocabulary and word study are also an important part of the English curriculum and students will increase their repertoire of language to enhance both reading comprehension as well as writing.
