Meloney Toms is the band director at Providence M.S.  She grew up in the Shenandoah Valley where she enjoyed playing the clarinet and being Drum Major of her high school band. She then moved on to college at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, where she received a Bachelor's in Music Education. She has been a band director in Chesterfield County since 1996.

The band at Providence M.S. is divided into three groups: Beginning Band (6th grade), Intermediate Band (7th grade), Advanced Band (8th grade).

A student must start at the beginning level in order to progress to the intermediate and then on to the advanced level. We offer several instrument choices for our students: flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba and percussion. A percussionist will first learn mallet instruments before moving on to drums.

Beginning band students are asked do not go out and purchase an instrument before the class starts. Mrs. Toms will work with each student to find the right instrument that will make them most successful. Brochures will also be provided to parents when the selections are complete. These brochures will include locations of music stores where instruments can be purchased or rented. Larger instruments like french horns, baritones and tubas are loaned to students through the school, one to play in class and one to take home. If you have any questions about instruments or rentals, please contact Mrs. Toms.
