5th grade Team

Reading

Students will use the following reading strategies to read age appropriate fiction and nonfiction texts:  clarifying, making connections, visualizing, questioning, predicting, drawing inferences, determining importance, synthesizing and summarizing.

Students will read with rhythm, expression, and intonation to convey meaning when reading.

Students will building listening and speaking vocabularies to improve oral language and communicate effectively.

Students will use resource materials that build understanding and aid in comprehension.

 Writing

Students will use the following traits in their writing:

  • Ideas- using interesting, relevant details to focus a topic and convey a message
  • Voice- adding energy to the writing by matching personality, style, and emotion with the purpose
  • Conventions- using what is known about grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling so the writing is easy to follow
  • Presentation (ongoing)- using uniform spacing, legible handwriting, and appropriate white space to make the writing neat and appealing
  • Organization- crafting a bold beginning, a mighty middle, and an excellent ending to help the reader understand the message
  • Sentence Fluency- constructing varied sentences to create a smooth, rhythmic flow
  • Word Choice- painting a picture in the reader’s mind using powerful, precise words

 Word Study

Vocabulary/Word Analysis - applying phonics, word structure, and context to improve fluency and understanding, and build vocabulary

 Math

Students will explore the following concepts:

  • Prime/composite numbers
  • Odd/Even numbers
  • Number patterns
  • Decimals through thousandths

Solve single-step and multistep problems involving addition, subtraction, (multiplication and division with and without remainders) of whole numbers and decimals through thousandths, fractions and mixed numbers in simplest form.

Investigate variables and open sentences.

Find the (sum, difference,) product, (and quotient) of two numbers expressed as decimals through thousandths (divisors with only one nonzero digit).

Create and solve single-step and multistep practical problems involving decimals.

The student will, given a problem situation, collect, organize, and interpret data in a variety of forms, using stem-and-leaf plots and line graphs.

Explore statistical data including mean, median, mode, and range.

Measure and investigate properties of plane figures.

Evaluate whole number numerical expressions, using the order of operations limited to parentheses, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Recognize, name, compare, order common fractions and decimals.

Identify equivalent measurements, choose appropriate unit of measurement in metric and U.S. Customary.
