Deaf and Hard of Hearing Department

DHH Teachers and Staff

The Deaf/Hard of Hearing program at Gates Elementary currently works with all students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing in various grade levels from Kindergarten to 5th. A Teacher of Deaf/Hard of Hearing assesses every student’s unique needs on an individual basis and uses the Total Communication approach as a communication philosophy in the school system. Total Communication approach includes but is not limited to: spoken language, sign language, speech therapy, fingerspelling, written language, and/or hearing aids. It encourages a child to use to use every available mode of communication to both receive and convey messages. The mode of communication depends on the particular need of the child, whether it is manual, oral, auditory, and written.
