Welcome from Danise Sumner: NEW READING SPECIALIST

posted Nov 8, 2017, 4:14 PM by Sophia Cimbal

Dear families,

My name is Danise Sumner and I am the new reading specialist at Gates. I am so excited to be here and look forward to working with many of you.

I have taught both third and fourth grades in Chesterfield for about six years. I went through Chesterfield County schools K-12 and am a graduate of Longwood University. I graduated in 2012 with my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. I am currently working towards my Master’s Degree in Reading Education at UVA and will graduate this December! I live in Richmond with my husband Ross and dog, Bailey. I LOVE to read, travel, shop and go try new restaurants!

The reading program I will be implementing will be a positive and supportive program designed to give students an extra boost in their academic skills and self-esteem. My key role is to provide supplementary interventions in small group and individualized settings. I will focus on different strategies to teach reading and provide differentiated instruction to all of my diverse learners.

My primary goal is to help each student acquire the necessary reading skills to become proficient readers. I will work with the core subject teachers to identify areas of need to individualize their educational experience. I will be constructing explicit small group lessons on a daily basis, and my goal is to make intervention a fun and positive experience.

My overall goal as a reading specialist is to meet my students’ needs, but also keep them motivated and engaged in the learning process. I strive to create a nurturing and stimulating learning environment that promotes achievement to the highest potential.

It's going to be a great year!

Good evening, this is Ms. Brink, Principal of Gates, calling with your weekly announcements.  This Friday, Oct. 13, will be our walk or bike to school morning.  Parents and students are asked to meet in the government complex center behind the roundabout circle in the parking lot.  We will leave the lot by 8:30AM so please come between 8-8:20AM to begin lining up.

If students and adults ride bikes, they must wear a helmet or walk the bike.  We are focused on safety and modeling those good habits.  Also be sure that students are wearing tennis shoes and NOT sandals.
