parent message 10-28-19

Good evening Gates Families,

This is Mr. Rowland with your weekly update.

October comes to a close this week.  Fall is starting to really take hold.  Saturday I broke out the rake and raked the yard to try and keep up with the leaves.  Did you?  Ms. Brink should be winging her way home and will return to her regular parent message duties next week.

Here are a few upcoming events.  Youth Blast Sports will present Promote Respect assemblies to students on Tuesday.  This was a rescheduled event from earlier in the month and ties in nicely with Bullying Prevention Month.  Thanks to Youth Blast Sports for being one of our business partners.

Thursday, Kindergartners will present their project based learning culminating activity about Letterland.  Not only will there be a little song and dance, all 26 letters will come alive in the Gates Letterland Wax Museum.  Those in attendance will learn about the letter, it’s sound, and words that begin with that letter.  What fun!

If you are taking part in any evening festivities Thursday night, please be safe.  We want everyone to return for Friday.

For future planning, parents don’t forget next Tuesday, November 5th, is election day!  I know ... how could you forget with political signs decorating neighbors yards and every other tv commercial is an ad spot.  However, it is also a teacher workday and students have the day off.

In the email, there will be a list of other upcoming events.

Great things keep happening at OB Gates!

ctober 14-18, 2019

Good evening, this is Principal Brink, calling with your weekly announcements for October 14-18, 2019.  Thank you to everyone that participated in our PAY to PLAY Day for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.  In less than 24 hours we collected $576.79 in honor of our school counselor, Kelley Arrowood.   We are so grateful for all of your support!

OB Gates Redistricting meeting will be on Tuesday, October 15 at 6:30-7:30PM in the cafeteria.  Please join us to learn about this process.

Promote Respect Month is CCPS program for teaching lessons about anti-bullying.   Youth Blast Sports is coming in to do the assemblies on Wednesday for all of our students on Promoting Respect!  The Chesterfield County Standards for Student Conduct and Attendance defines bullying as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. "Bullying" includes cyber bullying, but does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

Our school counseling department has shared this helpful document to teach our students and parents how to report events appropriately.  As always, please contact the school directly if you have immediate concerns. Social media is not the best platform for communication.  Bullying V Conflict Poster.pdf

Safety & Security Updates:  Thank you for you patience as we try to navigate safely how to have our students dropped off in the morning.  Mr. Rowland is asking that you complete this brief 2 question survey.  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdM1DvNE_e9GM_6u0ZtMMxnEbQZ2EJ5FymVMXTBzrvhOfI4bw/viewform

Lastly, I will be out of the building from Oct. 21-29, traveling to China with other Administrators from around the USA.  For the 2020-2021 school year, we would like to begin a Dual Language Immersion class focusing on Mandarin Chinese.

Letter from the County on Redistricting 2020

posted Sep 27, 2019, 10:33 AM by Sophia Cimbal   [ updated Sep 27, 2019, 10:47 AM ]

Dear Team Chesterfield families,

As we approach the fall 2020 opening of a new, replacement Matoaca Elementary School, redistricting is necessary in order to optimize classroom space and address student enrollment at other schools.

The new Matoaca Elementary, under construction on the site of the soon-to-be-former Matoaca Middle west campus, is designed to accommodate 750 students. Currently, there are fewer than 400 students attending Matoaca Elementary.

A preliminary redistricting proposal under consideration by the School Board would shift approximately 110 students from Ettrick Elementary to Matoaca Elementary and approximately 95 students from Gates Elementary to Matoaca Elementary.

Chesterfield County Public Schools will hold three information meetings about proposed redistricting that involves three schools: Gates, Ettrick and Matoaca elementary schools.

·         Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at Matoaca Elementary

·         Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Gates Elementary

·         Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Ettrick Elementary

These neighborhoods are proposed to transfer from Ettrick Elementary to Matoaca Elementary: Branch and Evans Estate, Bright Oaks Estates, Chesdin Heights, Crafton Heights, Deboer, Deere, Flintshire, Gateway Farms Apartments, Hickory Hollow, L.P.D. Enterprises, Millcroft, Nash Grove, Pypers Pointe, Rivers Trace, Taylor Hall Estates, Trentwood, Whispering Winds and parcels not in recorded subdivisions in the vicinity.

These neighborhoods are proposed to transfer from Gates Elementary to Matoaca Elementary: Beach Estates, Beechwood Forest, Chesdin Landing, Chesdin Shores, Deerwood, Rivers Trace (section K) and parcels not in recorded subdivisions in the vicinity.

Again, this is a preliminary proposal that will be discussed more in depth at the meetings noted above. We welcome your feedback at the meetings.

Sincerely

Dr. Merv Daugherty
Superintendent

Weekly message from Mrs. Brink 9/17/19

September 17, 2019

Good evening, this is Principal Brink calling on a Tuesday this week.  I apologize for the delayed message but I believe the seasonal allergies and cough are setting in!

Health & Wellness

Please remind your students to wash their hands and share crayons and not their germs!   Just a friendly reminder from Nurse Noble, students who are running a fever must be fever free unmedicated for 24 hours prior to coming back to school.   She also wanted me to share that when a student is brought to the clinic for a check such as falling on the playground or for a band aide, and it is not a serious injury or concern, she will document and then call parents prior to her leaving at the end of the day.  In the event of an emergency, she will call the parents immediately. Therefore, if you are picking up your child at parent pick up, Nurse Noble may still be calling parents at the end of the day. It doesn’t mean your child is not important to us; our clinic is very busy all day long!  Thank you for understanding.

ARRIVAL to SCHOOL

Traffic in the mornings is relentless with 3 schools on one street; over 30 buses and daycare vans trying to drop off students in our bus loop; and all of the parent drop offs coming in both directions.  Remember that our school day begins at 9:25am and we open the doors for students at 9:15am to start serving breakfast as they make their way to class. I am concerned at the number of students being dropped off in the front of the building with no adult supervision.  Carpooling may be a better option or simply putting your child on the bus. If you see the buses pulling out of CTC next door, please let them through so our students can arrive. The buses line up over there until most of our first load of buses come in starting at 9am and they are having trouble pulling in to our loop.  Any assistance will be helpful! Most importantly, students arriving late to school must be signed in by an adult. Please do not drop them off and pull off. Again it all goes back to safety.

DEPARTURE

Our new security guard at the end of the day has also made a request that parents please park in a designated space and only park in our handicap spaces if you have the DMV authorization. Mr. Ramos does have a reminder sticker that he will start placing on cars that are illegally parked; they are the same as Bird HS.   Thank you for not blocking the front of the building and our fire lane! We had our first fire drill last week and the students did amazing! This week we will practice our Lock Down drill on Thursday morning. Safety is a priority!

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHTS

Lastly, this Thursday we will welcome our ECSE PreK, Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade parents to Back to School night from 6-7:30PM.  Children are welcome to come with their parents but must stay with their parents at all times. We will start in the Gym and then the teachers will escort their parents back to their classrooms or location they will be presenting.  At 7:15PM we will wrap up and clear the building at 7:30PM. We look forward to sharing our curriculum and class expectations!

September Activities:

  1.  Grades PreK-2 Back to School Night for Parents  September 19, 2019, 6-7:30PM Gym

  2.  1st PTA Spirit Night at BRUSTERS ICE CREAM on Iron Bridge Road Wednesday, September 25, from 4:30-9PM

Monday Message for Sept 9-13

posted Sep 11, 2019, 7:21 AM by Sophia Cimbal

September 9-13, 2019

Good evening, this is Principal Brink, calling with your weekly announcements for September 9-15, 2019.  Today we welcomed all of our Kindergarten students back for their first day as a whole class!  It was so nice to see so many smiling faces!

This week, we will have our annual Back to School Night for grades 3, 4, and 5 and ALL students K-5 in our ADP and IDP programs with Ms. Lawson and her team.  Please come join us starting at 6PM in the gym for an overview of how to access school information, brief PTA voting, and the introduction of our teachers & staff.  After our short meeting, parents will be escorted to their child’s classroom with the teacher.  Please do not go into a classroom without the teacher present.

PreK-2 will have their Back to School Night next Thursday, September 19 starting at 6PM in the gym.   We will follow the same routine with the presentations tailored for our primary students.

This week, our 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade students are taking the MAP Pre-assessment.  Students are assessed in both Literacy and Math.  Next week, we will be working with 2nd grade and this is the first year that they too will participate in the testing.  The purpose of the assessment is to measure growth throughout the school year so that each student is able to demonstrate at least one year’s growth from the start of the year to the end of the year.  Students will be reassessed in January and then again in April.  Please encourage your student to just try their best!

September Activities:
1. Grades 3-5 Back to School Night for Parents September 12, 2019, 6-7:30PM Gym.   All ADP & IDP will attend grades K-5.
2. Grades PreK-2 Back to School Night for Parents  September 19, 2019, 6-7:30PM Gym
3. 1st PTA Spirit Night at BRUSTERS ICE CREAM on Iron Bridge Road Wednesday, September 25, from 4:30-9PM

Save the DATE! Watch Dog DAD Kick Off Tuesday, October 1, 2019, 6-7PM Cafeteria

WELCOME BACK& IMPORTANT DATES: MESSAGE FROM MRS. BRINK

posted Aug 12, 2019, 7:29 AM by Sophia Cimbal   [ updated Aug 12, 2019, 7:32 AM ]

August 9, 2019

Good afternoon STAR Families!  This is Principal Brink with a few important announcements for the start of the school year.  This is a long email! I will send the next Parent message on Monday, August 19, 2019, 6PM, and every week thereafter except holidays.

First I would like to welcome ALL NEW STAR Families that have registered since my last message in July and ALL returning STAR families!  We are so excited to start the new school year!

To kick off our year, we will host our 3rd Annual Grill N Chill on August 29, from 5-7PM.  This is a great opportunity for STAR families to bring their school supplies to school early and drop off in their classroom; meet your teacher and other students and families; complete any enrollment or registration needs; drop off medicine or health plans; and have dinner on us!  The teachers will be in their classrooms from 5-6PM, then they will come out to the playground section to join families in their respective grade level sections to mingle and eat from 6-7PM. Parents and students may drop off during 6-7PM in the building, then join us on the playground. Thanks to our many sponsors, PTA; Jerry Manning & Gates Athletic Association; Blast Youth Sports (formally Dong’s Karate); and Niagara water, for helping us kick off to a great school year!  Hotdogs, chips, cookies, and water will be served. We also have some fun activies planned for our students!  Mr. Rowland and I will have the pleasure in grilling for our families! If you are not able to join us, then August 22 from 8AM-5PM, you may drop off student supplies to the front office and we will ensure they make it to the classroom. Please label everything including clothing! We look forward to meeting everyone!

Throughout the summer months, we have been steady in enrollment but if you know anyone who has not registered for school, please have them do so now because our staffing is dependent on keeping our class sizes as low as possible!

Within the last two weeks, we have lost a teaching position and not able to hire for the 4th grade vacancy due to a drop in enrollment; we have to fill internally by moving a teacher from one grade level to the next. This could have a potential domino effect for three grade levels. Over the last week, I have been watching numbers in grades K, 1, and 2 which are our lowest in enrollment. These are the grade levels I have been instructed to collapse a class from 5 teachers to 4 which means students will be assigned to a new class. Since we are continuously enrolling students daily, we have NOT determined at this time which grade level and teacher(s) will be impacted.  August 12, ParentVue will go live for parents to see what class their child has been assigned. Please do not anticipate that this will stay the same in the next couple of weeks.  Grades 3, 4, and 5 are set and not subject to change at this time. September 30 is VDOE attendance deadline so we may have an opportunity to regain this position if we can have students registered within the next two weeks.  My goal is to be as transparent as possible so to not catch anyone off guard if their child's teacher changes in the next couple of weeks.  Parents will be notified if their child's class is impacted.

On a brighter note, I have been meeting with our Leadership Team of Teachers, PTA, and numerous Business Partnerships such as Church of the Nazarene Courthouse Road, Blast Youth Sports (formally Dong's Karate), Marcos Pizza, Heinz Investments & Nationwide Insurance, Gates Athletic Association, & Niagara Water planning for an amazing school year!  If you have a small business or know of someone who is interested in supporting our school and sponsoring a STAR Breakfast, please contact Mr. Rowland at Richard_Rowland@ccpsnet.net

So without further ado, here is some important information for starting the school year including upcoming events!

Please be sure to review with your child their bus number/route and where they will get on and off the bus each day.  Students in Kindergarten must have an adult or older sibling, babysitter, to receive them off the bus in the afternoon.  Be sure your child knows who will be waiting for them at the bus stop.
