Welcome from Danise Sumner: NEW READING SPECIALIST

posted Nov 8, 2017, 4:14 PM by Sophia Cimbal

Dear families,

My name is Danise Sumner and I am the new reading specialist at Gates. I am so excited to be here and look forward to working with many of you.

I have taught both third and fourth grades in Chesterfield for about six years. I went through Chesterfield County schools K-12 and am a graduate of Longwood University. I graduated in 2012 with my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. I am currently working towards my Master’s Degree in Reading Education at UVA and will graduate this December! I live in Richmond with my husband Ross and dog, Bailey. I LOVE to read, travel, shop and go try new restaurants!

The reading program I will be implementing will be a positive and supportive program designed to give students an extra boost in their academic skills and self-esteem. My key role is to provide supplementary interventions in small group and individualized settings. I will focus on different strategies to teach reading and provide differentiated instruction to all of my diverse learners.

My primary goal is to help each student acquire the necessary reading skills to become proficient readers. I will work with the core subject teachers to identify areas of need to individualize their educational experience. I will be constructing explicit small group lessons on a daily basis, and my goal is to make intervention a fun and positive experience.

My overall goal as a reading specialist is to meet my students’ needs, but also keep them motivated and engaged in the learning process. I strive to create a nurturing and stimulating learning environment that promotes achievement to the highest potential.

It's going to be a great year!

September 18-22, 2017

Good evening, this is Ms. Brink, Principal of Gates, calling with your Monday night message.

Thank you to everyone who was able to come to Back to School night.  We had two amazing evenings sharing our plans for the upcoming school year.

I would also like to thank everyone who participated in completing the Military Impact forms. Our numbers for completion jumped up significantly after both of our family nights last week.

Moving into our third week of school, please sure to check your child’s backpack each night  for folders or to check their agendas for homework.  Setting those routines now for completing nightly assignments is critical.  Time management is a critical skill that benefits all students.  Make sure you know how to communicate with your child’s teacher.  Do they have a Google class site or use Google Classroom?  Our 4th and 5th graders will be issuing chromebooks each day so if your child does not have access to technology at home, please let your teacher know so we can make some adjustments for them.  It is important that ALL students know their student identification number for logging into their google accounts. One last thing, parents in grades 2-5 can access Parent Vue to monitor grades.  Our teachers are required to have grades updated on the 15th and last day of the month (pay days).  Yellow folders will also come home around those days of the month, too, as a minimum requirement.

Thank you for your continued support!

Military Aide Form/ Survey

posted Sep 12, 2017, 3:53 PM by Sophia Cimbal

To continue to support classroom teachers and students in their joint pursuit of academic excellence, Chesterfield County Public Schools continues to pursue a variety of potential funding sources support our work. You can help us by filling out this survey, which is part of an annual process to receive federal Impact Aid.

Impact Aid is a national funding program designed to help local school divisions deal with federal regulations: for example, localities that lose property tax revenue from tax-exempt federal property. Impact Aid is part of CCPS’s general operating budget and supports instruction for all students.

All parents are asked to complete this survey. Even if you are not in the military or not employed on federal property, please check the applicable boxes and return the survey by Sept. 15. All information will be confidential.

Please note that not all federal employees work on property that is owned by the federal government (for example, post offices are not federal property). A short list of nearby federal facilities is shown on the survey. If you work at a federal site not listed or if you are not sure whether your place of employment is on federal property, please give the name and full address of your employer.

Thank you for your continuing support of Chesterfield County Public Schools.

2nd Week of School
Good evening, this is Ms. Brink, Principal of Gates, calling with your Monday night message!
We are hoping to see everyone this week for our Back to School nights.  Students are not required to come to Back to School nights; this is an informational event for the parents/guardians with the Administration and teachers.  After meeting in the gym briefly with the Administration and PTA, teachers will escort their “classes” back to their classroom to share class expectations and curriculum objectives.  We hope you are able to attend!

Students are permitted to enter the building at 9AM each day unless they are escorted by an adult who waits with them in cafeteria.  Our teachers are not on duty until 9:00AM.  Also, late arrivals and early dismissals will start being documented this week.  Students must be brought in the building in the morning by an adult if they are late for school to be signed in.  If you have an appointment, be sure to turn in the doctor’s note for excused purposes.

Back to School Nights:  Grades K-2 September 13, 6-8:00PM;
Grades 3-5 Thursday, September 146-8:00PM
PTA meeting  9/19 6pm-7pm in the library at Gates.
T-shirts are on sale now for the students to purchase their class shirt.  If you need assistance, please contact an Administrator.  The students wear their shirts on field trips and field day so it is nice to be sure every child has one.

Good evening, this is Ms. Brink, Principal of Gates Elementary, calling with a few summer updates.  Welcome NEW Kindergarten students and NEW students to Gates Elementary!  We are excited to have you at Gates next school year.  I hope everyone is READING anytime, anywhere, anything, and filling in the boxes on your Reading Chart.  Our Kindergartners should have a large white one in their registration packet and all other rising 1st-5th students at Gates brought home a large yellow chart!  Don't let the Summer Slide hold you back at the beginning of the school year!

Last Friday, our staff at Gates was notified that Mrs. Dillon would not be returning as the Assistant Principal.  I have attached a letter in the email correspondence.  Parent AP letter update.docx
