Dr. Abel's Weekly Message

September 24, 2019

Greetings, Midlothian Community. This is your principal, Shawn Abel, with your weekly message.

Thank you to everyone who donated denim to support our annual Denim Drive. We received word that we once again finished in the top three, which results in a generous donation to our school’s PTSO. The amount depends on exactly where we finished - scheduled to be announced on October 7th. We will raffle off the gift cards later this week - tell your student to listen carefully to announcements as we recognize our winners. Of course, you’re all winners in my book. :)

And thank you to all the parents who either donated items or time to support or wonderful Senior Convocation last week.

We have a very special event planned for this Friday, September 27th. Beginning at 10:30am, we will host a ceremony where Chesterfield County will formally name the street that runs between the student parking lot and the stadium after Major Charles Ranson, a 1997 Midlothian HS graduate who paid the ultimate sacrifice when he was killed in combat in 2011.

This special ceremony will take place in the student parking lot section nearest the football practice field. We ask that students not park in that area this Friday, September 27th, to ensure we have enough space for the ceremony and guest parking.

Parents may click here to access our parent / teacher conference scheduling program. Parent / Teacher Conferences are scheduled for November 25th and November 26th. If you have trouble using the program to schedule your conferences please do not hesitate to contact our front office.

Check out the new sidewalk and crosswalk, which now leads directly into the main entrance of our school. To ensure everyone’s safety, students who walk to school must cross Charter Colony Parkway at the new Crosswalk area. For everyone’s safety, please do not cross at the previous location near the electronic sign. Also, please do not park your vehicles on Sovereign Grace Drive.

The Midlothian High School Parent Teacher Student Organization will convene its monthly meeting on October 9, 2019 at 7pm in the Midlothian High School Library. The meeting will last approximately 45-60 minutes and will allow the membership to convene to address PTSO matters and discuss future events. Please RSVP to midloptso@gmail.comso we can plan for seating.

Let’s talk about how to help our teens become more Resilient. While adulthood is filled with serious responsibilities, being a teenager isn’t exactly stress-free. What helps teens in navigating challenges is Resilience. Resilient teens are problem solvers. They face unfamiliar or tough situations and strive to find good solutions. It is never too late to teach and learn Resilience. Come and join the discussion!

Homecoming is right around the corner as our Spirit week will run from Monday, Sept 30th - Friday, Oct 4th, concluding with our homecoming parade (arrive by 5:45pm) and football game. The homecoming dance is scheduled for Saturday, Oct 5th, from 7:00pm - 10:00pm. Below are our planned Spirit week themes and other information.
Movie-star Monday: Come dressed as your favorite celebrity or movie character
Too Tired Tuesday: Wear your comfy pajamas
Wild Wednesday: Come dressed as your favorite animal or wear animal print
Team Thursday: Rep your favorite sports team
Friday: Class spirit colors
Seniors - togas/white
Juniors - black
Sophomores - pink
Freshmen - red

Community Service Project
Coin Wars - see your class officers for information regarding our homecoming community service project.

Parents - please remember to speak with your student about making good choices. The consequences for attending a school-sponsored event under the influence or in possession of alcohol, drugs, or tobacco (including vape devices) are very severe and non-negotiable. We want our students to have fun, but to also be safe.

Students will have the opportunity to purchase tickets to the powder puff game, football game (parade included), and dance next week during their lunches. Please do not wait until the last minute to purchase a ticket as they will not be sold after the deadline.

Put down that spatula and get out to Chick-Fil-A this evening as a portion of the proceeds will support our award winning marching band.

Don’t forget to check out our activities calendar on our school website so you can get to support our Midlo events and competitions.

As always, thank you for your support, and of course, Go Midlo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Old, yet relevant news………….

Juniors and seniors and parents are welcome. Q and A follows the presentation.

Now that Chromebooks have been issued I want to remind everyone that the school division will once again utilize a program which scans files on our students’ Google Drive. The program alerts school division officials if there are inappropriate photos, inappropriate content, threats to self or threats to others which helps the school division to protect our students and provide the support needed to keep our school safe.

Remember all school rules apply to the content on a student’s Google Drive, so students should review what pictures and movies are stored. If a cell phone is connected to the Chromebook and allowed to upload pictures and movies, students are responsible for anything uploaded.

Don’t forget to sign up for our Kroger Cares program. If you are already registered to support Midlothian High School, you may wish to check that your registration is rolling over to the current school year. This program is easily the most simple way to support our school. All you have to do to help our school to earn thousands of dollars annually is register your Kroger Cares card using the id number below.

Midlothian HS Kroger Cares ID number: IQ182

You can register your card online at Kroger’s website or by visiting the store.
