March 08, 2018

On this day in 1950, Volkswagen, maker of the Beetle automobile, expands its product offerings to include a microbus, which goes into production. Known officially as the Volkswagen Type 2 (the Beetle was the Type 1) or the Transporter, the bus was a favorite mode of transportation for hippies in the U.S. during the 1960s and became an icon of the American counterculture movement.  The VW bus was reportedly the brainchild of Dutch businessman Ben Pon who saw a market for a small bus and in 1947 sketched out his concept. Volkswagen engineers further developed the idea and in March 1950, the vehicle, with its boxy, utilitarian shape and rear engine, went into production. The bus eventually collected a number of nicknames, including the “Combi” (for combined-use vehicle) and the “Splittie” (for its split windshield); in Germany it was known as the “Bulli.” In the U.S., it was referred to by some as a hippie van.  How will you contribute to history? Make it a great day… or not. The choice is yours.

Today’s MM is 4E.

Tomorrow will be 1.

March is Youth Art Month… Claude Monet said, “Color is my day-long obsession, joy and torment.”

Seniors: John Tyler CC representative Samantha Simpson will be here TODAY during MM in the Library.  If you’re interested in applying and hearing more about the Scholarship program, you should attend.  Please visit the Career Center webpage and use the College Visits tool--to receive a pass the morning of the visit.

Are you planning to take a dual enrollment course next year? Are you new to DE? If so, meet in the library this afternoon immediately after school. Counselors will be on hand to help you complete your John Tyler application.

Please congratulate the Midlothian High School Orchestra members for receiving four straight superior ratings at their state assessment yesterday.
