Slam! by Walter Dean Myers is centered around the maturity of Greg “Slam” Harris, a six foot, four inches tall, high school junior, basketball prodigy at Latimer Magnet High School. He is a new edition to a team with a historically poor record, yet, he alone, is improving the team. However, his academic performance could use some work. Because his grades are not his priority, he is forced to make a tough decision. Administration in his school required him to get his grades together and fix it or he will not play. The choice is left to Greg: Is he able to study, get better grades, and balance his extracurriculars with his studies, or will he be forced to stop doing what he is passionate about? Walter Dean Myers’ Slam! begs for the answer to this question: Is Greg able to step up his game on and off of the court?
