Music Curriculum Overview

Kindergarten and First Grade
  • Playing and recognizing classroom instruments by name: drums, tambourines, bells, triangles, etc.
  • Movement activities (e.g. circle dances, free space movement, etc.)
  • Songs that support the curriculum thoughout the year: children’s literature, seasons, colors, numbers, etc.
  • Learning how to read and write rhythm patterns using vocabulary: ta, ti-ti, rest
  • Recognizing steady beat through movement and playing instruments
  • Playing upward/downward melodic patterns using barred instruments
  • Recognizing opposite concepts in music: i.e. high/low, fast/slow, quiet/loud
  • Songs in AB and ABA form
Second and Third Grade
Playing barred and percussion instruments in two-part ensembles
Learning about the music staff and vocabulary: treble clef, hand staff, mnemonic devices for lines and spaces
Learning about the instruments of the orchestra using websites such as Carnegie Hall Listening Adventures, SFS kids and games: 
  • instrument bingo
  • Partner, line and circle dances
  • Reviewing rhythm values and adding new ones
  • Songs that support the curriculum throughout the year
  • Songs in AB and ABA form
  • Identifying different genres of music and discussing composers: classical, jazz, rock and roll, etc.
Fourth and Fifth Grade
Rhythm and notation games to review and extend learned concepts: rhythm bingo, notation bingo, notation basketball, notation around the world
  • Recorder Unit: Recorder Connections method book/ learning notes on the recorder and playing songs in treble clef
  • Drum Unit: percussion ensembles in up to four parts
  • Ensembles using barred instruments and percussion: ex. Mallet Madness
  • Guitar Unit (Fifth Grade only)
  • Songs that support the curriculum throughout the year
  • Identifying different genres of music and discussing composers: classical, jazz, rock and roll, etc.
