Bruce Fillman
Principal

I am honored to be the Principal of a school with as deep and rich a history as J. G. Hening Elementary. It is my belief that learning does not begin or end within the walls of a school, learning occurs within each child’s community. In partnership, we can provide the education that our children deserve and need to be successful. I look forward to joining the Hening community and to being part of the continuing legacy of J. G. Hening Elementary School. Below is a brief summary of my background.  Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be part of your child’s education.

After attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where I received a Bachelor of Science in Education and a commission into the United States Army Reserve, my wife, Stephanie, and I moved to Virginia, where I taught fourth grade in the Richmond City Public Schools. Upon completing my second year of teaching, I was deployed to the Middle East in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Returning from deployment, I joined Chesterfield County Public Schools as a teacher at Bon Air Elementary School. While teaching at Bon Air, I continued my education, earning a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University. I was appointed the Assistant Principal at Swift Creek Elementary School in 2011 and shortly thereafter began working on a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership at VCU. When not at school, I am most likely spending time with my family (my son Kent, my daughter Sophia, my wife, and our dog Pepper), running, or working on my doctoral degree.

Suzanna Thomas
Assistant Principal

It is a true pleasure and honor to serve as the Assistant Principal of JG Hening Elementary School.  Hening has been my home since I moved to Virginia from San Antonio, Texas in 1998. Throughout the years at Hening  I’ve taught kindergarten, first, second, and third grade (Center Based Gifted). The last five years I held the Title I Reading position which allowed me to work with students in grades K-5.

My years at Hening have allowed me to serve in various leadership roles which motivated me to grow as an educator and pursue higher learning goals.  I achieved my National Board Teaching Certification and earned my Masters of Education in Educational Leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University. The years here have also helped me to connect and work with our fabulous Hening students and families.

When I’m not in school, I enjoy running on the local trails or races, and spending time with friends, family, and my dog Peyton.  She’s named after my favorite quarterback (recently retired) who used to play on my favorite NFL team-The Colts.

I strongly believe Hening is THE best elementary school around with THE best  teachers and THE best families!  #Hening ROCKS!
