Reading is the heart of learning at Scott Elementary!  Our goal is to cultivate life-long readers who are exposed to all genres of books. Through Balanced Literacy, our County reading approach, we give students the opportunity to listen, speak, read, and write.  Students are taught comprehension strategies through authentic literature, traits of writing, word study at their level, and differentiated reading instruction.  In addition, students are given ample independent reading time.  Students participate in Million Minute Reading to encourage reading at home.   Math and Reading night, our Book Give Away, and Read Across America activities are just a few of the other ways we promote and support reading.

Pictured below are reading thinking stems and word reading strategies we use with our students when we read.  These help students during the reading process to decode and comprehend what is being read.
