Language Arts

In fourth grade, students continue to develop an appreciation for reading by participating in the Accelerated Reader program. Students are assessed every nine weeks to determine their reading level and take AR tests for comprehension. The students continue to increase communication skills in large and small-group settings. Writing and reading skills support an increased emphasis on context-area learning and utilization of the resources of the media center, especially to locate and read primary sources of information. A significant percentage of reading material will relate to the study of mathematics, science, and history. Students use text organizers, summarize information, formulate questions, and draw conclusions to demonstrate reading comprehension. Students learn to plan, draft, revise, and edit writings.



Math

In mathematics students are grouped in a regular grade level glass, or an accelerated math class. The standard level class is taught 4th grade skills, and the accelerated class is taught all of the 4th grade skills and most of the 5th grade skills. Instruction includes whole group, small group, games, activities, technology integrated/enhanced instruction and problem solving.

  • Number sense (place value with whole numbers and decimals)
  • Rounding
  • Estimate/add/subtract whole numbers and decimals
  • Patterns
  • Line and Bar graphs
  • Estimate and multiply whole numbers
  • Geometry
  • Elapsed time
  • Estimate/divide with 1 and 2 digit divisors
  • Fractions and mixed numbers concepts
  • Probability
  • Measurement (length, liquid volume, mass/weight, temperature)
  • Estimate/add/subtract fractions and mixed numbers 



Science

In Science, the fourth graders explore the worlds of the Scientific Investigation, Weather, Plants and Animals, Electricity and Force, and Space.



Social Studies

In Social Studies, we teach our students about the wonderful state of Virginia where they live. We not only want them to learn information, but to love Virginia and desire to visit the tourism state. Virginia Studies gives students the opportunity to understand Virginia’s history from the cultures of native people, founding of Jamestown to the present. Geographic, economic, and civic concepts are within the context. Students develop the skills needed to analyze, interpret and demonstrate their knowledge of important events in our history. They learn of the contributions made by many people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Students take a Standards of Learning Test at the end of the school year.
