As students complete their elementary career, the building blocks laid by primary grades are cemented in place. For many students, the big ideas and concepts they are exposed to early on begin to make sense. More reading strategies and focus on novel studies takes place at this level. Writing becomes more developed and creative as students practice finding their written voice. Math instruction takes place on grade level with continued enhancement of number sense – studying decimals, fractions, statistical concepts, measurement and more. Some students will participate in accelerated math which exposes them to the sixth grade math curriculum and they will take the sixth grade SOL test. Scientific experimentation, classification of living organisms, studying the characteristics of the ocean and our Earth as well as investigating how sound and light work are all part of fifth grade science lessons. The world around us provides lessons for social studies as we hone map reading skills, delve into ancient cultures and study the seven continents, their beginnings and their cultural influences on our world today.
