Oct. 2-6 Weekly Snapshot

September left as quick as it arrived! Thank you for an awesome first month of school! Congrats to our Box Top Winners...Landen Hatchell (Mrs. Rymer) handed in 310 BT$. Just over 5000 BT were turned in total...that’s $500 for the school. The overall class winner for September was Mrs. Rymer with 513. I'd like to give a special shout out to Mrs. Wagner with 423 and Mrs. Schirmer with 310 for their awesome support as well.

Here's what's happening this week at CHES:
  • Monday our 5th graders attend a fire safety program and 2nd/3rd attend a PBIS assembly at CHES.
  • Monday evening is Library Night at the Public Library on Deer Run. see attached flier
  • Tuesday grades 3-5 attend our Student Leadership Kick Off. Be sure to ask your child about the application process for joining a leadership cabinet at CHES! Girls on the Run, Art Club, and Challenge Island meet after school.
  • Wednesday is International Walk or Bike to School Day. Meet at the Woodlake Swim and Racquet Club at 7:45. Click here for a video on safety reminders. Jog/Walk will still meet Wednesday morning. Click here for a flier with more detailed information.
  • Thursday Girls on the Run and Girl Scouts meet after school.
  • Friday is our first CHES Champ Breakfast at 8:45 in the CHES cafeteria. Invitations were sent out Friday to all September CHES Champs.
  • Friday is also an early release day. If your child is going home a different way than usual, please send in a note with your child. 
  • This week we are celebrating the birthdays of Mrs. Patrick (Monday/1st grade) and Mrs. Seiler (Wednesday/Secretary).
  • Speaking of birthdays, our Birthday Book Club Celebrations are this week...Tuesday is K-1st, Wednesday 2nd-3rd, and Thursday 4th -5th. 
  • Here are two new CCPS policies to be aware of:

    • 1. Bullying: CCPS STANDARDS FOR STUDENT CONDUCT AND ATTENDANCE DEFINES BULLYING AS: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyber bullying but does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

      • New Bullying Investigation Practices

        • The counselor or administrator will review and if necessary, complete the investigation.

        • All investigations will be shared with the principal who will send a letter to the parent/guardian of the victim & perpetrator. At the end of the investigation and within 5 school days of the incident, parents/guardians of all students involved will receive a letter from the principal sharing: Incident, Findings of investigation, If bullying is founded or unfounded, Any future actions for the student

    • 2. Chronic Absenteeism: Missing 10% or more of the school year for any reason (excused or unexcused). How much is 10%? Answer: 2 days a month! (18 days)

      • Excused Absences: Illness (if over two days, the school may require a note from the physician); Medical and dental appointments; Court appearance; Death in the family; Extenuating circumstances as determined by the school administration.

      • New regulations from VDOE: After 10 total absences, CHES will begin to count all absences toward chronic absenteeism.

        • Chronic absence includes excused absences!

      • When will parents be contacted?

        • 5 unexcused absences:

          • Direct contact with parent

          • Develop an attendance plan with parent, student & staff

        • 6 unexcused absences:

          • Face to face meeting with parent to hold attendance conference; May include community service providers

        • 7 unexcused absences:

          • Notify CCPS attendance officer who will file a complaint at Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court; Hold attendance conference; May include community service providers
