Weekly Snapshot Week of 1/22/18

posted Jan 21, 2018, 11:08 AM by Allie Strollo   [ updated Jan 21, 2018, 12:10 PM ]

Good afternoon CHES Families,

We are glad the snow is gone and we are looking forward to an entire week with students...finally!

In case you missed the Snapshot last week, our PTA has purchased Storia for each student. Storia is an online library with over 2,000 books. To access Storia, have your child log on to my.ccpsnet.net and click on their backpack. In their backback, they click on the Storia app. Personal libraries are already set up for each student with grade level texts. Students can also browse books to add to their bookshelf. Our wonderful staff just learned how to use this program, so keep your eye out for teacher assigned books that will appear on your child's bookshelf. For now, we are encouraging students to just log in, explore, and read. For younger students, parents can help them explore books of interest and audio books. We are hoping to send instructions and log in information home with younger students this week. Please keep in mind, most teachers haven't explained or introduced Storia to students yet. We are sharing this information with you with the hopes that you'll explore and have fun for now!

Does your child love to draw? Each year, the VA Lottery encourage students, parents and the general public to send thank-you notes to Virginia’s deserving public school teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week. This year, they're looking for three student artists to have their artwork featured on thousands of thank-you notes distributed across the state as part of their inaugural Thank a Teacher Art Contest. The contest is open to K-12 public school students, and one top-prize winner will be selected from each level: elementary school, middle school and high school. The three winners will not only get to see their artwork featured on the 2018 thank-you notes, they’ll also receive individual cash prizes and win money for their school’s art department. Click here for more info!

Weekly Snapshot 1/15-1/19

posted Jan 15, 2018, 1:23 PM by Allie Strollo   [ updated Jan 15, 2018, 1:31 PM ]

Good afternoon CHES Families,

Don't get me wrong, I love a snow day. I know teachers and parents love them too...well, until we have too many. Then they just start messing things up too much and making up for lost time becomes more and more challenging. If my calculations are correct, we have only had 20 days with students since Thanksgiving Break. So I beg you...no backwards jammies, no flushing ice cubes, and no spoons under pillows!

On to other news...we've gotten a lot accomplished at CHES since Winter Break (despite the snow). Last week, our student leaders led their best Town Hall Meeting yet. Students reviewed Habits 2 and 3: Begin with the End in Mind and Put First Things First. They learned about setting and reaching personal goals. In case you aren't aware, our Town Hall Meetings are completely 100% student led. They come up with their own ideas, write the scripts, and invite other classes to participate. This month, they called and invited someone from the Richmond Animal League and came up with their own interview questions. Our students were super excited to meet our special guest and "KiKi" and hear all about how she uses goal setting in her career. I'm amazed each day as I watch our leaders grow through our school wide implementation of The Leader in Me and the 7 Habits. As a school, we are excited to begin sharing information about the program and the 7 Habits at upcoming events...stay tuned for more information. You can start by asking your child about the 7 Habits and what they mean.

I'm excited to share a new reading program we are using at CHES. Our PTA has purchased Storia for each student.

We also have 3 student teachers with us at CHES-Kara Ingram (Schirmer), Katherine McGrath (Kim), and Angelique Scott (French). Please click here to view a letter from Ms. Scott who will be working with most students in Art (unless they have Mrs. McDermott).

Here's what's happening this week at CHES:
  • Monday (1/15) No school for students; Holiday
  • Tuesday (1/16) COGAT letters go home with all 3rd grade students. 3rd Grade Family Night Out at Chick Fil A at 5 PM; PTA meeting at 6:30 PM

Weekly Snapshot 12/4-12/8

Thank you to everyone who came out to Holiday House this past weekend. On behalf of CHES, I'd like to thank the countless number of volunteers and the PTA who pulled off this remarkable event.

Last week, I kicked off our 12 day countdown until winter break with our awesome staff. I'm still collecting raffle items if you're interested in making a donation. Items can include gift cards, supplies, candles....just about anything.

Instead of a "Mitten Tree" in the office this year, we are going to have the following Sign-Up genius sign-up link for anyone who would like to help support any students and their families in need this holiday season. If you would like to support any of our students and their families in need, please select and reserve what item(s) you would like to donate through this sign-up sheet by Friday, December 8.   All items must be dropped off/turned in to the School Counseling office by Tuesday, December 13.  After purchasing item(s), please label the item(s) with the letter and number below the item listed in the sign-up (i.e., A1).  This will allow Ms. Malakoff to know what gift(s) go to which student.  Please do not gift wrap any items.

The Service Learning Cabinet is sponsoring a Holiday Food Drive for Feed 23112 from Tuesday, December 5-Thursday, December 14.  Feed 23112 is a local food pantry for residents of the 23112 zip code located at Clover Hill HS. View the attached flier for a list of specific items.

Here's what's happening this week at CHES:
  • All week we will be celebrating Inclusive Schools Week!
  • Tuesday (12/5) Picture day for re-takes, make-ups and class pictures.

Nov. 13-21 Weekly Snapshot

posted Nov 11, 2017, 6:16 PM by Allie Strollo   [ updated Nov 12, 2017, 7:50 AM ]

This week's snapshot will cover through Thanksgiving Break! Our next snapshot will be delivered on Nov. 26.

Thank you so much to everyone who attended our Veterans Day Programs last week. Our resource team and students did a remarkable job recognizing and honoring our heroes. I'd also like to thank our students, teachers, and parents for attending conferences last week. Our students in grades 3-5 did an amazing job of leading their own conferences this year.

Throughout the week, I will be writing each staff member at CHES to let them know how thankful I am for their dedication to our students (including bus drivers, custodians, aides, teachers, office staff, etc.). I have attached a copy of the cards I will be writing to teachers. If you would like to thank a staff member, please use the cards attached. There is no better way to show appreciation than a heartfelt note. Students are also encouraged to write on the cards as well. My plan is to distribute cards to teachers and staff this Friday, Nov. 17. If you or your child writes a note(s), please place it in an envelope or drop it off in the front office by Thursday. Write as many as you wish! If you would like to submit a card digitally, please use this link. I will take care of having it printed on a card.

Here's what's happening this week and next week at CHES:
  • Our Dreambox Challenge continues this week. Each student who completes 30 lessons during the Dreambox Challenge Window (Oct. 30-Nov. 17) will receive a Dreambox tag for their leadership lanyard. The class with the most lessons earns a pizza party. If we reach our goal of 15,000 lessons, the school earns a pajama day on Tuesday, Nov. 21. As of Friday night, we have already completed 12,000 lessons!

I hope everyone has a fantastic Thanksgiving Break. One of the things I am most thankful for is coming to work and serving as Principal of Clover Hill Elementary!

Thank you for all of your support!
