Physical Education

Did you know that P.E. is one of the most important subjects your child can learn in school?  By gaining early success in the basic physical skills and concepts, your child will feel better about his or her ability or participate in recreational activities, will be more successful if he/she chooses to compete in youth sports leagues, and will find it easier to accept himself or herself and to be accepted by their peers as they move through the school and adult years.  Their success in physical education impacts their success in school.
 
In addition, learning basic movement skills and knowledge in physical education helps your child feel good about moving, which in turn encourages him or her to be active and healthy.  We know that physical inactivity is one of the leading causes of heart disease and mortality in our country.  So you see, good physical education can make a different in your child's health.
 
In physical education class this year, a child in grades K-3 will learn and continue to refine skills and concepts centered around the following themes:
 
  • Body Awareness (body parts and body shapes)
  • Spatial Awareness (moving through space by self and with others; moving in different directions, at different levels, and on different pathways).
  • Effort (moving with variations in force, speed, and flow)
  • Relationships (with self and objects, partners, and groups)
  • Locomotor Movements (walk, run, hop, skip, jump, gallop, slide, leap)
  • Jumping and Landing, Rolling, Balancing and Weight Transfer(educational gymnastics)
  • Chasing, Fleeing, and Dodging (skills used for tag and other movement activities)
  • Dribbling with Hands and Feet
  • Kicking and Punting
  • Throwing and Catching
  • Volleying
  • Striking with Short- and Long-Handled Implements
 
Fitness-Related Activities
The activities mentioned above are put into the context of appropriate games, dance and rhythms, and educational gymnastics.  They are sequenced with your child's abilities in mind, with the end result to help your child learn and be successful in these situations.
 
Activities for children in grades 4 and 5 will focus on having students work on combining basic skills and concepts on this page together into more advanced and dynamic activities.  The activities are centered on individual practice, partner work, small games, dance and rhythm activities, as well as educational gymnastics.
 
As a teacher, I recognize that children are at different developmental levels, with a variety of needs and interests.  For this reason, in every class I attempt to provide all of the children with experiences that are both beneficial and enjoyable.  Each lesson is also adjusted to take into account the wide range of skills and fitness levels that characterizes children in elementary school.
 
I want to invite you to observe your child in his or her physical education class at any time during the year.  If you have the opportunity to visit, you will quickly see that your child's physical education classes are very different from what you may have experienced when you were a child.
