Beth Nathanson is Chesterfield County Teacher of the Year!

posted May 9, 2019, 8:34 AM by Lee Newman

Bon Air Elementary teacher named school division’s top educator (from Superintendent's Wednesday Spotlight)

“What happens when an educator combines passion, personality and inspiration with a sprinkling of pixie dust? I can’t adequately describe the creativity, bordering on brilliance, Beth brings to her classroom every day. I can say this: Beth is very fond of Walt Disney World and travels often to Orlando. Perhaps that explains her unconditional commitment to Walt Disney’s philosophical cornerstone: If you can dream it, you do it. Beth can. And she does.” – Janie Singleton, Bon Air Elementary community member

“She consistently uses research-based practices in her classroom, she employs formative assessment methods to constantly monitor student progress, and she provides specific feedback to students based on observed need to ensure growth occurs on a daily basis for every student in her classroom.” – Heather Gentry, Bon Air Elementary principal

These are among the descriptions used by colleagues, administrators and community supporters to describe Beth Nathanson, a Bon Air Elementary School fifth-grade teacher named today as Chesterfield County Public Schools’ 2020 Teacher of the Year.

Nathanson, who also was selected as the school division’s Elementary Teacher of the Year, has been a teacher for the last seven years. She has worked at Bon Air Elementary since 2015, having joined Chesterfield County Public Schools from Smyrna Elementary in Tennessee.

“The selection committee was impressed by Ms. Nathanson’s commitment to finding authentic, engaging ways to develop a love of learning,” said School Board Vice Chair Dr. Javaid Siddiqi, who serves Bon Air Elementary as the Midlothian District representative. “The classroom transformations described in her teacher of the year packet illustrate an educator devoted to meeting the needs of her students in a manner that provides relevancy in a fun learning environment.”

After attending a Get Your Teach On conference, Nathanson was encouraged by opportunities to transform her classroom environment to improve student engagement. Opportunities such as Glow Games, Rock Your School Day and Wild Car Day reignited teacher passion throughout Bon Air and keep students’ interest in what was to come. Earlier this year, River City Diner donated menus and hats for a transformation that turned the classroom into an eatery that taught students about budgets, bills, taxes and tips. Another partnership with Chippenham Hospital, turned the classroom into an operating room where surgical teams of students healed patients by solving problems and placing bandages on injured areas.

Flip Flops for Recess and PE:  With the arrival of warmer weather, we are seeing an increase in the number of accidents and student falls at recess due to wearing flip flops.  Our parent/student handbook prohibits wearing flip flops for recess and gym because of the increased risk of injury. If your child wears flip flops to school, please remember to send another pair of shoes for them to change into at recess time.

So please register early and help us get our counts right.  Click here for the link to register.

Experience a petting zoo, tree climbing, live insects, information tables, arts and crafts, and more. Even though the event is free to students, families and the community, they will have a variety of vendors selling different items. The Plant Sale is huge this year! They will have annuals, perennials, and edibles for every garden. Crestwood students planted and cared for many of the veggie offerings. The greenhouse is full, this is the plant sale to end all plant sales. There will be food trucks for families who want to buy lunch or a treat! The PTA will also be selling bottled water and baked goods.=

Parent Pick-Up Reminder:  Thanks to all of our parents for your patience this past week as we began our new parent pick-up process.  Please remember that for safety reasons, all students must enter cars on the passenger side. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations to Mr. Todd Williams, Bon Air Elementary School’s Support Staff Employee of the Year!

Lost and Found:  As we approach spring break, it is time to clean out our lost and found.  All items that remain in our lost and found after next Friday, March 29th, will be donated over spring break.  If your child is missing any clothing items, jackets, water bottles, or other items, please have them check the lost and found before dismissal on March 29th.

Parking Lot Work:  As we continue to prepare for the arrival of Crestwood Elementary School this fall, work on our gravel parking areas by the baseball fields will occur next week.  On Tuesday and Wednesday, our gravel parking areas will be unavailable, as a contractor will be adding gravel and working to enhance the parking spaces in this area.  Staff members will be parking in the field on Tuesday and Wednesday so that any family members visiting our school can park in the paved parking lot by our cafeteria. If you visit BAES on Tuesday or Wednesday next week, please be sure to park in the paved parking lot by the cafeteria, not in the gravel parking area.

Parent Pick-Up Reminder:  After we return from spring break, we will begin our new parent pick-up process. Click here for a letter with more information.  Please be patient the first two weeks, as this process will take longer while our staff and students learn the new routines and procedures.

Early Release Reminder:  This is a reminder that Friday is an early release day for students.  Dismissal will occur at 11:15.

Children who will be four years old by Sept. 30 and who live in the school’s attendance zone may apply for prekindergarten.  Acceptance into the program is based on need and not first come, first serve.  Click here for more information.
