Advanced Trail Work: Maintenance and Construction

The best way to learn trail maintenance and trail building skills is through hands-on training with an experienced and knowledgeable trail crew leader. CCCMB invites members of the community to join us on scheduled trail work days where knowledgeable crew leaders will demonstrate techniques. The more frequently you show up to trail work days and the more questions you ask, the more you will understand concepts such as:

  • Optimal rolling drain dip location
  • Grade reversal construction
  • De-berming and outsloping
  • Knicks
  • Brushing as an effective traffic management tool
  • Turns and switchback construction and maintenance
  • Clearing the trail corridor
  • Bench cut trails
  • Retaining walls
  • Armoring
  • Water crossings
  • Tool knowledge and power equipment certification

Periodically, CCCMB also holds special sessions focused exclusively on skill building.
