Potential At-Risk Maps and Information

The following are the potential at-risk maps produced during the Arkansas Resource Assessment - Phase I. The NRCS definition of the natural resource concern and the input layers and land use designation weights that were used for modeling the natural resource concerns within the Soil Quality Degradation Resource Concern are listed to the right of each map. More detailed maps are available by clicking the link below each map. None of the natural resource concerns under the Soil Quality Degradation Resource Concern were selected for Priority Area designation at this time.

Compaction

    NRCS Definition:
        Management-induced soil compaction resulting in decreased rooting depth
        that reduces plant growth, animal habitat, and soil biological activity.

    Land Use Designation Weights:
        Crop (Weight 3); Pasture (Weight 2);
        Forest, Range, Urban and Assoc. Ag (Weight 1); Water (Weight 0)

    Binary Input Layers and Associated Weights:
        – SSURGO Organic Matter             <= 1.5 (Weight 1)
        – SSURGO % Sand, Silt, and Clay  <= 20% Clay in Surface Layer
                                                                    (Weight 2)

Organic Matter Depletion

    NRCS Definition:
        Soil organic matter is not adequate to provide a suitable medium for plant
        growth,  animal habitat, and soil biological activity.

    Land Use Designation Weights:
        Crop (Weight 3); Pasture, Forest, Range, Urban and Assoc. Ag (Weight 1);
        Water (Weight 0)

    Binary Input Layers and Associated Weights:
        – SSURGO Organic Matter             <= 1.5 (Weight 2)
        – SSURGO % Sand, Silt, and Clay  <= 28% Clay in Surface Layer
                                                                    (Weight 1)

Concentration of Salts or Other Chemicals

    NRCS Definition:
        Concentration of salts leading to salinity, sodicity, or both, reducing
        productivity or limiting desired use. Concentrations of other chemicals
        impacting productivity or limiting desired use.

    Land Use Designation Weights:
        Crop (Weight 3); Pasture (Weight 2);
        Forest, Range, Urban and Assoc. Ag (Weight 1); Water (Weight 0)

    Binary Input Layers and Associated Weights:
        – SSURGO Taxgrtgrp = Natraqualfs, Natrudalfs Natrustalfs (Weight 1)
        – Cropped Portions of SE AR Groundwater Salinity Issues (Weight 1)
        – Farmers with Salt Issues (Weight 2)
        – 303(d) Impairments by 12-digit HUC – Salinity (Weight 1)
