Effective July 18, 2012, Information Technology Services (ITS) has updated the settings on the outgoing email server (smtp.cwru.edu) to further protect the identities of CWRU email service users. This change requires users of email programs such as Outlook, Thunderbird and Mac OS X Mail to ensure that an encrypted connection is used to send email. Encrypting the connection protects a user’s CWRU Network ID and password from being compromised. Email programs that do not use an encrypted connection will not be able to send emails. Individuals who use webmail.case.edu rather than a separate email program will not be affected.
Security settings are reviewed in the following training documents:
Outlook 2010 Windows 7 (uses Google Active Sync to create secure connections)
Outlook 2011 Mac OS X Lion
Thunderbird Windows 7
Thunderbird Mac OS X Lion
Mac Mail OS X Lion
