Who Are We?
Case Men's Glee Club, or CMGC, is a men's a cappella ensemble which performs a variety of choral arrangements, including traditional barbershop-style harmony, popular music, and commercial jingles. Founded in 1897 at the Case Institute of Technology, we've been an a cappella tradition at Case Western Reserve University for over 100 years.
An excerpt of a letter to readers of the Case Glee Club book:
The Case Men's Glee Club was founded in 1897 when the idea of a "Glee Club" was still very young. This puts the Case Men's Glee Club among the elite group of men's choirs founded in the 19th century. The Club has a long and storied history of touring destinations and performances and was one of a small number of Glee Clubs to tour domestically and abroad, most notably in major musical centers in Europe.
Over the years, student from various academic backgrounds have contributed their voices and energies to the Glee Club providing sweet sounds that graced the ears of faculty and student on campus as well as those of eager listeners at concerts around Cleveland. Since the union of Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve University, the composition of the Glee Club grew to encompass students from all of the newly affiliated schools. Aside from this scholastic diversity, many members are also involved in other musical and performing arts groups on and off campus. The experiences gathered from these other groups bring a fresh influx of talent and ideas to the Club.
Tradition is important to the group and this is evident in the repertoire, which contains many time-honored men's four-part choral arrangements interspersed with modern songs and commercial melodies.
The coming years will hold continuing success for the group as the musical repertoire broadens and touring opportunities increase carrying the group across the country and hopefully back to Europe. The members aspire to leave a legacy to be enjoyed and continued by future generations of students on the campus of Case Western Reserve University. It is my firm belief that these successes stand as a testament to the pride and joy with which the group remembers its history and looks forward to a bright and endless future.
