Scholarships to Attend Cascadia Irish Music Week

We are very pleased to announce the recipients of the 2019 Cascadia Irish Music Week scholarships . . .

Aidan Horowitz, 14, Seattle, Washington - Fiddle

Aidan Horowitz is 14 years old and lives in Seattle. He has studied classical violin at the Suzuki Institute of Seattle for 8 years, and first discovered his love of Irish fiddle playing music at home with his family. He has attended several Cascadia Irish Music Weeks and enjoys taking Randal Bays’ Irish Tune Learning Class.


Alisa Bright, 20, Monroe, Washington - Fiddle

Alisa Bright started learning the fiddle when she was seven years old at the Sky Valley Education Center in Monroe, Washington. She still lives in Monroe and often plays with her family band for local events. She also sings and plays the whistle, mandolin, guitar, harp, and bodhran. Alisa is a student at Lake Washington Institute of Technology for Graphic Design. 


Amelia Ryan, 10, Portland, Oregon - Button accordion

Amelia is 10 and lives in Portland, Oregon, where she first heard Irish music from her dad Chris. She took up the button accordion two years ago and studied with Johnny B. Connolly and Brian O hAirt in Portland.  She plays often in sessions and concerts with her dad and her sister Catherine who plays the fiddle.


Cathal Mee, 14, St. Paul, Minnesota - Button accordion

Cathal is 14 years old and lives in St. Paul, Minnesota. He has been playing the button accordion for 8 years, and enjoys playing in sessions and concerts around the Twin Cities. He takes lessons from John McCormick at the Center For Irish Music in St. Paul.


Catherine Ryan, 13, Portland, Oregon - Fiddle

Catherine lives in Portland, Oregon. She’s thirteen years old and has been playing the fiddle for about four years. Her dad Chris plays the fiddle and Catherine first started learning at home. She’s also taken lessons from Kevin Burke and has played in concerts and sessions in Portland with her dad and her sister Amelia who plays the button accordion.


Grace Broadhead, 15, Sandia Park, New Mexico - Fiddle

Grace Broadhead is a 15 year old Irish fiddler and step dancer from Sandia Park, NM. She has been playing the Fiddle for 4½ years and has competed in the Midwest Fleadh in 2018 and 2019.  This year her Newly Composed Tune came in 1st place.  She has played in many sessions and concerts in New Mexico and has danced with the New Mexico Philharmonic and other prominent groups.
