posted Dec 14, 2012, 4:12 AM by Simon Lewis   [ updated Feb 27, 2013, 1:50 AM ]
Welcome
to our final newsletter of 2012. I can't believe how quickly our first full term has come to a close. We're getting close to the winter holidays and everyone is very excited about our first ever Christmas-themed concert. We'll be holding the concert in the school at 12:30pm on Wednesday and Thursday and as I'm typing this, I'm listening to the rehearsals. The children sound amazing and we're very grateful to the teachers and staff for all the work they are putting into this very special concert. We'll be closing for the holidays on 21st December at 12pm and we'll be back for a full day on 7th January, 2013. I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very happy holiday. I'm looking forward to a fantastic 2013.
I hope you enjoy reading our monthly newsletter and until the next time, keep happy, safe and learning! Simon.

News
Parents' Council AGM
The Parents' Council hosted their AGM on Monday, 26th November. The evening was a great success and it was nice to see so many parents in the school to support the parents. The Parent Council Constitution was passed by the parent body and was officially adopted. Both Simon Lewis and Marie Scully gave talks on parental involvement and praised the Parents' Council for all their work in the school

Primary Pledge
Congratulations to the Parents’ Council and our fantastic children for doing so well in the Primary Pledge. Our pledge, this year, was to collect 100 toys in aid of Holy Angels Centre. Not only did we reach our target, we smashed it! We collected over 250 toys in total.

Christmas Decorations
A huge thank you to our Parents' Council for decorating our school so beautifully for the holiday season.

Christmas Concert
As mentioned in Simon's letter, we are hosting our first Winter Concert. The concert will take place during school over two days. As this is our first concert in the school, we will not be charging an entrance price. We will host a raffle at the concert and all attendees will get a free ticket courtesy of our Parents. As usual, there are some great prizes.

As the school has grown over the last years, the children will be split into two groups:

  • Wednesday 19th: Junior Infants, 2nd Class and Derek’s Class will perform with 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class
  • Thursday 20th: Senior Infants and 1st class will perform with 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class

Our Parents’ Council will hold a special raffle on both days. Tea, coffee and refreshments will be served.

Student Council News
The student council has been working with the parent council this year regarding a number of projects. At the moment they are discussing the possibility of special outerwear for certain school trips. They are also working very hard on maintaining the yard games.

Classroom News
Junior Infants are learning all about the Post Office in Junior Infants at the moment. They thought about where our letters go when we post them, and looked at a virtual sorting office They learned that for a letter to go to the right place you need to write the address and put a stamp on the envelope. They now have a post box in our classroom now for any letters we write in school. We’re having fun pretending to be the postman delivering letters!

Adam’s mam, Kasia, came into first class to teach some new art ideas for Christmas. The class made Christmas tress, decorations, a class tree using handprints and they decorated and ate some Christmas cookies that had been prepared earlier by Kasia. The children really enjoyed the art but the favourite was definitely the cookies, they were delicious!!

Over the past while Derek's class have been discovering all about our 5 senses in our science lessons in class. They talked about sight, hearing, touch, sense of smell and taste.
They had a map of the tongue and discussed all the different taste sensors on their tongues – they also tested them out!
