April 2015 Newsletter

posted May 4, 2015, 3:01 AM by Simon Lewis
Dear parents,

As we had a very short month due to the spring break, this month's newsletter will be short and all class news will be combined into our May newsletter. Please read this newsletter carefully as there are a large number of events going on in the school this month, which will affect you and your child(ren).

Friday 8th May
Student Council / Parents' Association Cake Sale
Our annual cake sale in aid of a local charity takes place on Friday, 8th May. This year the students have selected Holy Angels' Day Centre as their charity of choice. We would appreciate all cakes, buns and other sweet treats on Friday morning. Due to severe nut allergies, please do not bring in products with any nuts. Parents and families are welcome to the school for tea, coffee and cake on the day.

Monday 11th May
Official School Opening
The school will be officially opened by Minister Jan O'Sullivan. An email has been sent out to all families with details of the event. It is hugely important to read them carefully so as not to be disappointed on the day. It is expected to be a very busy event and we appreciate your cooperation.

Tuesday 12th May to Friday 15th May
Drawing Book
All children will be given the chance to draw a picture in their drawing book. They draw one picture per year and after 8 years of primary school, they are presented back to them to show their progression through primary school. This year we will have some children drawing their 7th drawing!

Thursday 14th May to Monday 18th May
Book Fair
The Book Fair is back for 3 school days. 60% of all sales of books go directly to our library. The Book Fair is open to all families and friends from 1:30pm on Thursday, Friday and Monday. Pupils will also have a chance to visit the book fair with their class.

Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th May
Standardised Testing
All pupils from Senior Infants upwards will be taking standardised tests on these two days. It's really important for your child to attend school on these two days. If your child cannot come to school on these days, please let us know so alternative arrangements can be put in place. These tests are used to help us determine resources for the upcoming year and in future will be used by the Department of Education to determine resources for the school. However, please do not worry about the tests or try to prepare children for them as they are not like the exams you may have been used to when you were in school. They simply present us with data to show progress every year. We share the results with parents on the pupils' end of year report cards.

Friday 22nd May - Wednesday 27th May
Erasmus+ Trip
Five members of staff will be going to Torun, Poland as part of our European exchange programme. This means that the office will be closed at this time and Simon will be teaching full-time. Please be patient with us during this time as phones will be checked periodically.

Saturday 25th May
Educate Together AGM
The annual Educate Together AGM will be taking place in Portlaoise ETNS this year. If you fancy going along to see how the wheels of Educate Together work, let Simon or Siobhan know and we'll help you out. The school has presented one motion from the Board of Management this year.

Phew!
