Alexander Balatsky: DNA Electronic Fingerprints by Local Spectroscopy on Graphene

I will review a rapidly developing field of electronic biological molecular imaging and sequencing using local probes. I will describe a search for a working and scalable alternatives to the conventional chemical methods of DNA sequencing that are based on electronic/ionic signatures. Success of this effort would revolutionize the field of sequencing. The approach based on a single molecule imaging and spectroscopy with unprecedented resolution, achieved by Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS) and nanopore electronics could enable this breakthrough. We use the data from our group and others to illustrate possibilities of electronic sequencing of freeze dried deposits on graphene. Thus fingerprints of DNA-graphene hybrid structures may provide an alternative route to DNA sequencing using STS.
