  • Young CEHS Mock Trial Earns 20th Place in Nationals
This past weekend, our Mock Trial team, coached by Mary Page, Dick O’Meara and David Hillman, came in 20th in the nation in the national competition in Boise, Idaho. That is an extraordinary accomplishment by our team members Jack Stewart, Grace Roberts, Emma Schoonover, Ben Harrington, Dan Howard, Lilli Frame, Zoeth Chalat, Libby Palanza, and Mariana Godfrey. Notice: not one senior!

Let's put this effort into perspective. The nationals case is released in early April. The team competed and took 20th place in the second week in May. Getting ready for that case in that time is like taking the equivalent of Honors Chemistry class in six weeks, in the evening, even while some of the students were taking the real Honors Chemistry—and many other classes--during the day!

To put this into further perspective, here are some facts as summarized by coach Dick O’Meara in a recent email:

    • We had three freshmen, three sophomores, and two juniors competing at Nationals this year (most opposing teams had several seniors and very few underclassmen).
    • Neither of our openers (Zoeth and Jack) had ever done an opening statement in competition before.
    • Neither of our closers (Lilli and Emma) had ever done a closing argument in competition before.
    • Libby had never been a witness in competition before.
    • Grace had never been a lawyer in competition before.
    • Marianna and Lilli had never done cross-examinations in competition before.
    • Jack and Emma had never done direct examinations in competition before.
    • Dan was our only team member with Nationals experience, having competed once as a freshman witness last year.
The work effort of these teens was phenomenal. The work effort of the coaches matched their students’. What a gift they are to these young people.

Great job by all. When you see any of these students, if you have not already, give them a high five!
