  • English Update -
    Happy Friday!

For November 12 - 16, we will wrap up our unit on making inferences & drawing conclusions. We will continue spiral reviewing this skill throughout the year so please continue to discuss it with the students. Our test is tentatively scheduled for the end of the week or the early part of the next week.

We will also begin our class novel titled Thanksgiving Treasure. We will review the skills we covered the first nine-weeks and introduce others as we read the novel. Another focus of the novel is on annotations and taking notes as we read. It is an amazing novel that has an excellent message to it and I am looking forward to reading it!

Each chapter will be on our Google Classroom.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please let me know!

I am also attaching this past week's weekly agenda along with next week's. I update them daily, so I only have Monday's for next week. These can also be found on our website and Google Classroom.

Thank you and I hope you all have a great weekend!

  • English Update!
    Happy Friday!!

This week, we tested on "Seventh Grade" and the grades are on parent-portal.

We also began our unit on "Making Inferences & Drawing Conclusions". I e-mailed notes last week and they are also on Google Classroom. This is a difficult unit, so please review what we are doing in class with the students and ask them about how to make an inference. One of their favorite inference activities this week was figuring out the owner of a faculty member's pocketbook.

Many have asked how to help the students at home with making inferences & drawing conclusions. Here is a link for activities to do at home: http://www.readingrockets.org/article/making-inferences-and-drawing-conclusions

Next week, we will continue with inferences as well as a short story by Edgar Allan Poe titled, "The Black Cat". We will test on "The Black Cat" later in the week. I am attaching notes and vocabulary for this story. Please review the vocabulary and notes.

    Upcoming Assignments:
Due: Monday, October 29: Vocabulary Student Definition for "The Black Cat"
Due Monday, October 29: Review notes on "The Black Cat"
Due Friday, November 2: Vocabulary Choice Board for "The Black Cat"
Due November 5: First independent reading novel

If you have any questions, please let me know!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

    Thank you,

  • Inferences - "Seventh Grade" - Reading Goals
    Good Morning!

On Friday, we have a test on the short-story "Seventh Grade". All notes and assignments are on Google Classroom to study.

Our next unit is on Drawing Conclusions and Making Inferences. This is a difficult unit because it involves students to "read between the lines" and make an educated guess based on author clues and their own background knowledge. An important skill we continue to develop is to have students have evidence for their answers.

At home, when students are working on things for class or outside of class, please ask them the "why" or "how do you know" questions to reinforce what we are doing in class.

I am attaching introductory notes for our unit on Inferences in this e-mail. Students may print them off at school as well.

On Wednesday, I introduced their new Independent Reading Goals. I broke these up over three segments.

Novel 1 is due on November 5.
Novel 2 is due on November 26.
Their final reading goal of the second nine-weeks is due on December 12.

Students choose their own independent novels, read them, fill out their reading journals, and take and pass an Accelerated Reader Test on the novels. Each student will have their own reading goal that is due by December 12.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

    Upcoming Dates:
Friday, October 19: "Seventh Grade" Test
November 5: First Novel Completed & AR Test Passed
November 26: Second Novel Completed & AR Test Passed
December 12: Accelerated Reader Reading Goal Due

    Thank You,
