Mrs. Kelly deBernard 

Mrs. deBernard was born in Buffalo, New York. After her family moved around the United States 6 times, they settled here in Altavista. Mrs. deBernard graduated from Longwood University and moved back to Altavista with her husband, Kevin. They have 2 children, a son and daughter, named Kiernan and Keegan. She is also the fur Mom to a Great Dane, Zeus. Mrs. deBernard enjoys showing horses, being a soccer and marching band Mom, and gardening. Mrs. deBernard taught for 13 years in 3rd, 4th, and 5th at Concord Elementary. This is her 3rd year at AES.  


Mrs. Ashley Carasella 

Mrs. Carasella was born and raised in Virginia Beach, VA. She received her Bachelors degree from the University of Virginia, then went on to receive her Masters degree from Liberty University. She met her husband at LU, and they were just married this summer! Mrs. Carasella  and her husband just bought their first house in Altavista where they live with their 3 adorable puppies. She loves decorating their new house, entertaining friends and family and being outside with her dogs. This is Mrs. Carasella’s first year teaching, and she cannot wait to begin her teaching career with a fantastic fifth grade class!


Mrs. Jennifer Foreman

Mrs. Foreman was born and raised in Lynchburg. She received her Bachelor's degree in education at Liberty University. After teaching for several years she continued her education by receiving a Master's degree in Special Education and a Master's degree in Leadership and Supervision at Lynchburg College.  She has taught first, third, and fourth grade.  This will be her first year as a fifth grade teacher. Mrs. Foreman enjoys spending her free time reading, completing DIY projects around the house and creating stained glass windows. She also enjoys trips to the beach to collect seashells and relax. She lives with her husband and son in Bedford.

 Mrs. Samantha Janiak

Mrs. Janiak was born and raised in Altavista. After completing her degree at Radford University she moved back to Altavista with her husband Jeff. They have a 3 year old daughter named Eann, a baby on the way, and 3 rescue mutts. Mrs. Janiak enjoys interior decorating, planning parties, and watching football. This is her 3rd year teaching 5th grade, but her 7th year teaching. Mrs. Janiak loves being home and teaching in the community she grew up in. 

Mrs. Kimberly Johnson

Born and raised in the Hurt/Altavista area, Mrs. Johnson is a graduate of Gretna High school, earned a BS in education from Longwood College, and a MEd in Curriculum and Instruction from Averett University. Mrs. Johnson is married and enjoys competing in archery tournaments with her husband, Paul. She is blessed to have been rescued by three fur babies. She loves the beach, boating, sports, and is a loyal fan to the University of Virginia athletics. Mrs. Johnson appreciates a good mystery and can often be found watching the ID channel during leisure time at home.  Finally, she is part of the Contemporary Christian band Living Legacy, and enjoys sharing her faith through her music. Mrs. Johnson taught Chapter 1 reading in Cumberland County before returning to Altavista Elementary where she's taught grades 1-5 at various times throughout her 29 year career. Fifth grade is her favorite because she appreciates this stage in development as well as a fifth grader's sense of humor!
