Calstock Hall - Martin Simpson

posted 13 Sep 2017, 06:58 by Calstock Parish Council

Saturday 16 September

Martin Simpson returns to Calstock Hall on Saturday. His concerts are always profoundly moving experiences taking us through an eclectic repertoire of songs and guitar virtuosity.

He has been nominated an astounding 27 times in the fifteen years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards - more than any other performer - with 9 consecutive years as nominee for Musician of The Year, which he has won twice.

He lived for 15 years in the USA where he was called "the finest acoustic guitarist on the planet" (Chicago Tribune) and "one of the finest fingerpickers and slide players of our time" (Guitar Player).

Last week he released his 20th solo album in 40 years ‘Trails & Tribulations’.

‘Trails & Tribulations’ is a collection of songs about nature, travels and real life stories. There are traditional songs, poems and contemporary songs by great writers, and songs that I had to write because nobody else knew what I wanted to say. I travel, I learn songs, I write and try to get better at the skills required for me to do my job. I look at the world as I pass by, on the road, out of the train window, or as I stop and pay close attention to the square foot under my nose. There is so much to see and to hear and to inspire and to try and understand. I had a huge amount of fun playing and recording these songs, using different instruments, different noises, old friends and new ones, all of whom brought so much to the mix.
Martin Simpson, April 2017.

Hand in hand with his long and storied solo career, Martin has been central to seminal collaborations with The Full English, The Elizabethan Sessions and Simpson Cutting Kerr. He has also worked with a dazzling array of artists from across the musical spectrum: Jackson Browne, Martin Taylor, June Tabor, Richard Hawley, Bonnie Raitt, Danny Thompson, David Hidalgo, Danú, Richard Thompson and Dom Flemons.

Don't miss this very special concert.

Police are appealing for witnesses to a head-on collision on the A388 at Callington on Friday [1 September] which left four people injured.

Emergency services were called at 5.05pm after the collision between a black Renault Clio and a green Volkswagen Lupo.

All three people from the Renault Clio were taken to Derriford Hospital.

One of the passengers, a 27-year-old woman, sustained serious leg injuries and was airlifted to hospital by the air ambulance. The male driver and another woman, both from Callington, are not believed to have sustained serious injuries.

The driver of the Lupo, a 34-year-old woman from Beaworthy, sustained a chest injury and was also taken to Derriford Hospital.

Officers from the Alliance Roads Policing Team along with a forensic collision investigator and scenes of crime attended the incident and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the collision and would also like to hear from anyone who may have seen either vehicle travelling on Launceston Road prior to the incident.

Anyone who can assist is asked to contact police via 101@dc,police.uk or by phone on 101, quoting log number 0653 of 01/09/17.
