Whether you are using an article, book, website or visual material, a citation will require you to gather the following basic information:

  • Author/creator
  • Title of work - if it's an article you will need the title of the article and the title of the periodical (magazine, newspaper, or journal)
  • Publication information: if you are using a book you will need the place of publication and the publisher's name, and the date of publication
The type of resource you are using (book, article, website, etc.) will dictate how this information should be presented (punctuation, etc.).  A style guide will help direct your construction of citations.
