What Do School Counselors Do?
School Counselors are involved with everything that involves students' social emotional, academic, and career exploration needs. They work from a strengths-based perspective to help all students persevere through challenging times. Southern Hills counselors meet with students 1:1, in small and large groups, and with families and teachers. School Counselors are everywhere: one minute they are helping a student create a plan for catching up on missing assignments and the next they are in the cafeteria supervising and talking with kids.
School counselors who work at the middle school level help the students in a variety of ways:
Identification of Interests and Academic Aptitudes
Goal Setting, Course Selections, and Academic Achievement
Academic Interventions / Response to Intervention
Development of Social Skills / Resistance of Peer Pressure
Development of Decision Making and Problem Solving Skills
Transitioning Successfully to High School
Mission and Vision
As school counselors, it our mission to work alongside administration, staff, parents, and community to support students as they gain the skills and knowledge necessary to make a positive contribution to a changing world. This will be accomplished by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program to provide a safe and caring learning environment in which academic, career, and social-emotional development is possible.
The vision of the Southern Hill's counseling program is to provide a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses the academic, social, and emotional needs of all students.
To advocate for the needs of all students and staff, regardless of differences in race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, national origin, religion, ancestry, need for special education services, marital status, genetic information, or physical characteristics.
To work collaboratively with students, parents, staff, and administrators to inspire and empower reflective, action-orientated, lifelong learners.
To provide leadership at a building and district level that promotes positive systemic changes in order to best serve all of our students academically, socially, and emotionally.
To be preventative and proactive by teaching students important life skills that help them cultivate their unique abilities to discover and pursue their dreams.
