Scholarship Opportunities

Scholarships are open to current high school seniors throughout the academic school year.  We encourage every senior student and parent to visit our scholarship page weekly for available scholarships and deadlines.  Many scholarship applications can also be submitted online and links to those can be found in the scholarship descriptions below.  When applying for scholarships please provide your counselors with a resume of activities/honors/awards that you have earned during high school, as this will allow them to assist you even further in the scholarship matching process. Please note any scholarships below that require a school nomination (i.e. UNC Morehead-Cain Scholarship, NC State Parks Scholarship) please direct those inquires to the appropriate contact person listed below.

Who can participate in the Scholastic Awards?

Participation in the Scholastic Awards is open to students enrolled in:

  • grades 7–12 for the 2017–18 school year;
  • public, private, home school, or other educational programs in the United States, U.S. territories, Canada, and American Schools abroad.

Work created in the spring semester of 2017 is eligible for submission, so long as the student hasn’t graduated. Students should submit in their current grade level. Seniors who will graduate mid-term in December 2017 may participate.

Ignite Excellence Scholarship- Gardner Webb University

The Ignite Excellence Scholarship Competition is the largest honors scholarship competition open to current high school seniors, who plan to apply to Gardner Webb University.  Eligible students will have the opportunity to apply for this scholarship and also network with key staff at Gardner Webb University.  Criteria is as follows: Minimum Grade Point Average of 3.70 or higher, Composite ACT score of 25 or higher OR a Total score of 1200 on the SAT.  Winner will receive 4 year paid tuition and room/board at Gardner-Webb University, 2nd-5th place winner will receive a scholarship to cover the cost of full tuition.  Students Must apply for the ignite scholarship, write an essay and provide 2 letters of recommendation.  Please see your counselor for details on how to apply for this scholarship.

Holiday Hero Scholarship

The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas will award a $1,000 scholarship to a local student this holiday season as part of its annual Holiday Hero scholarship program. This opportunity is open to any student in the region who hosts a successful blood drive with CBCC from Nov. 15, 2017, to Jan. 15, 2018. The student who hosts the top-producing blood drive will earn a $1,000 scholarship to the secondary educational institute of their choice. 2017 Future of Assisted Living Scholarship, the premier ratings and reviews site for senior services providers nationwide, is proud to announce our fourth annual scholarship for advancement in higher education. This is a general scholarship which will award each of the selected applicants with a scholarship award of $2,000. 

Selection and Eligibility Criteria

The annual scholarship award is for three (3) students enrolled in an associate's degree, bachelor's degree or graduate level program at an accredited 2-year college or 4-year university during the 2017-2018 academic year.

The following are ineligible to apply:

  • Employees of, A Place for Mom, Inc., or A Place for Mom Canada, Inc.
  • An immediate family (spouse, parent, child, sibling and their respective spouses, regardless of where they reside) of an employee of, A Place for Mom, Inc., or A Place for Mom Canada, Inc.
  • A person living in the same household, whether or not related, of an employee of, A Place for Mom, Inc., or A Place for Mom Canada, Inc.

Please include the following three items in your submission:

  • 250 word maximum introductory bio about yourself – you may choose to include your work or educational background, why you're seeking a degree in your field, and why this scholarship interested you.
  • 500-750 word essay response to the question: How can your major of study improve the lives of seniors in assisted living facilities in your town?
  • Signed and dated Scholarship Award Agreement.

NCSU Centennial Scholarship

Scholarship offered by the NCSU College of Textiles and open to current high school seniors who are planning to attend NC State University and major in one of the following fields: Science, Engineering, Technology, Math, business or retail management, forensics, medical fields, design or fashion merchandising.  5 different scholarships are available.  You MUST be nominated by EBHS.  Please see your counselor for more information or if you would like to be nominated.

Air Force ROTC Scholarship Program 

Highly competitive scholarship program open to current high school seniors that will pay for all college expenses.  Eligible candidates would be highly motivated with an outstanding academic record, leadership and community service.  Scholarships are available in the fields of Engineering, Science and Technology.  For more information on this scholarship please see your counselor.

Clemson University Lyceum Scholars Program 

A unique scholarship Opportunity open to current high school seniors who are planning to apply and attend Clemson University.  The Lyceum Scholars Program provides students with robust training in the essential ideas that form the foundation of free institutions.   The total scholarship is worth $10,000.  Please see your counselor for more information.

Catawba College- West Teaching Scholarship

The Catawba College Teacher Education Department and The Ritchie Academy for Teaching are asking for your help in reaching students who have an interest in the teaching profession.  Please tell your high school students that the West Teaching Scholarship at the Catawba College Academy for Teaching is available. The scholarship is a yearly award of $2,500 in addition to any other academic scholarships for which the student is eligible. The Academy provides a wealth of experiences including early field experiences, excursions and professional networking.  We currently have 15 West Teaching Scholars across four cohorts!  Interested students may apply online or contact us to discuss this scholarship.   The deadline for submitting applications is December 1, 2017.  In order to be eligible for the West Scholarship, students must have applied to and have been accepted to Catawba College.

The Community Foundation of Burke County

Visit for local scholarship opportunities. Their scholarship program offers financial assistance to individuals pursuing education through various scholarship funds. These funds have been established by generous donors, including individuals, families, organizations, and corporations from our community.

Scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,500 are available for qualified students. Recipients are selected on a competitive basis, considering academic and non-academic factors and demonstrated financial need. Many of the funds target students from specific areas of interest to the donor, including successful performance in high school, high school attended, and academic or career focus. Note application deadlines for each scholarship. Suntrust Off to College Scholarship Sweepstakes

Coca- Cola Scholarship 

Each year the Coca-Cola Foundation gives away a $20,000 scholarship to current high school seniors at schools across the United States, who plan to attend a 4 year college or university upon high school graduation. This scholarship is an achievement based scholarship awarded to current high school seniors on track to graduate in June 2018 and are US Citizens. Wendy's Heisman Scholarship

Since 1994, the Wendy’s® High School Heisman® Scholarship has been recognizing and rewarding senior athletes who excel in the classroom, on the field, and in the community. This year, we're awarding $150,000 in college scholarships. Give your most well-rounded seniors a shot at winning.

John Montgomery Belk Scholarship- Davidson University 

 4 year tuition paid scholarship to Davidson University.  Qualifying students will have exemplary academics, show leadership and outstanding character.  Interested students must see Ms. Peck to be nominated.

Thomas Wolfe Scholarship- UNC- Chapel Hill

A full undergraduate scholarship open to current high school seniors planning to attend UNC-Chapel Hill and major in the areas of creative writing and/or journalism.  3 recipients will be chosen.  Applications and all supporting materials MUST be submitted online.  For more information and the link for the application, please see your school counselor.

Danforth Scholars Program- Washington University in St. Louis

A full or partial-tuition scholarship opportunity open to current high school seniors who are planning to apply and attend Washington University in St. Louis.  Students must be nominated for this scholarship.  Potential Candidates will have demonstrated leadership in service, academic excellence in a rigorous course of study and who exhibit strong moral character, selflessness, a passion for helping others and a commitment to the community.  If you are interested in being nominated, please see Ms. Peck in the EBHS counseling office.
