Notes from a Half-a-Country Rep

With BSME membership at over 100 schools, the role of the Country Representative has never been more important. The organisation needs to balance local, regional and global interests and the Country Rep is a significant link in a complex communication network. My area, Dubai and the Northern Emirates, includes 32 schools, about a third of the membership, and even keeping a Headteachers/Principals contact list up-to-date can be oddly challenging. I welcome the introduction of the BSME Termly Newsletter and this will be another way to support communication and strengthen the role of the Country Reps.

One of the key roles of the Country Rep is the visiting of schools who are applying for membership. Earlier this month I visited a school in Dubai with new BSME Chief Operating Officer, Olivia Roth, and we trialled a new BSME Visit Form. This gives helpful guidance and prompt questions, and the final version of this will be sent to Country Reps very soon. When Olivia was in Dubai she also attended a meeting of more than 20 BSME Heads and gave a great presentation regarding the services offered by BSME and how these might develop in the future. If you are planning a country Heads' Meeting, then please let Olivia know, and if she is able to attend then this will benefit all concerned.

A quick reminder to Country Reps, but also an open invitation to all schools, the BSME Office would like to display art work or photos from your school, so that visitors to the offices can be surrounded by images of happy BSME members from around the region. Please send three or four high-resolution images to Olivia and these can then be printed and will show your school name and country.

The 2017 BSME Conference is going to include a short session for Country Reps, so look out for this on the programme too, as it will be an opportunity to discuss the role and share good practice. At the end of this term we are saying goodbye to our Abu Dhabi Rep, Alun Yorath from Brighton College, and are welcoming new interim Rep, Alison Lamb, Principal at Al Rabeeh School. Thank you to both of you for taking on this role.

Finally, as Country Rep you are invited to contribute to this newsletter. You may wish to write a few words about BSME in your country or mention some bright ideas or good practice from local schools.
