TERM 1 OVERVIEW

The BSME U19 Triathlon, hosted by Kuwait English School, kick-started the BSME Events calendar in October. 4 schools participated in the event, and each team needed to complete the sprint triathlon distance which involved a 750 metre swim followed by a 20 kilometre cycle ride culminating with a 5 kilometre run. After being crowned champions in two categories and finishing third in the other, the Kuwait English School triathlon team was crowned the overall winners.

The BSME U15 Games returned to St Christopher’s in the early part of November, and what a Games it was! Over 260 students competed in 4 different disciplines over 3 days with the gold and silver positions too close to call; however, The British School Al Khubairat finished strong in athletics to be crowned the BSME U15 Games Champions.

The BSME Debating Tournament, now in its fifth year, was held at St Christopher’s mid-November. The event involved more than 130 debaters from 6 schools, and there were 143 debates over the weekend. Dubai English Speaking College won the Senior Section, while Jumeirah College won the Junior Section. The motion was the same for both finals: ‘This House Believes That Russia is more responsible than the western powers for the suffering in Syria’. Other motions included a variety of political and environmental topics, such as, ‘This House regrets investment in asteroid mining’.

The inaugural BSME U13/U15 Netball Tournament was hosted by Brighton College in November, which was a huge success. The English School Kuwait were dedicated from the outset and were declared the U13 Champions, and Doha College played an exceptional standard of netball to take the U15 title. Due to the popularity of the event, we are looking at expanding the competition to the following age categories for 2017-18 - U11, U13, U15, U19. If your school is provisionally interested in attending this event next year, please let me know which age groups your school would be looking to compete in, to enable us to plan the competition effectively.

Each term BSME will feature a report from a school who has participated in one of our competitions. This term’s report (which can be viewed here) has been written by Roxy Simon at The English School Kuwait, and is a reflection on TES’ journey to be crowned the winners at the BSME U13 Netball Tournament.

I’m excited to announce that next term will see the launch of the ‘BSME Hall of Fame’. This document will record each school that secures the top spot for all future BSME competitions. Stay tuned for more info!

Without our host schools, we wouldn’t have been able to offer our students such fantastic opportunities. On behalf of BSME I would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to our Term 1 hosts:

To ensure that we can accommodate as many of your calendars as possible, please email me your term dates for 2017-18 as soon as you are able to. Whilst we cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate all of your individual calendars, BSME will work closely with the host schools to ensure there are as many opportunities for your school to attend as possible.

If you would like to introduce a new event, please contact me as soon as possible. I would be very interested to hear from schools that would like to host a coding competition, photography competition or anything relating to the STEM areas.

Co-opted Heads of PE (HoPE)
This year’s co-opted HoPE meeting will take place at Rashid School for Boys, Dubai on Thursday 16 March 2017. A core group will meet to discuss changes to the handbook for the following academic year, and changes will be announced at the BSME PE Conference (see below) and confirmed in writing in Term 3’s newsletter.

Each HoPE will be given a sport to review and edit in full, for example, aligning the BSME swimming rules with FINA. The sports as listed in the handbook are athletics, basketball, netball, volleyball and swimming. If you would like to be considered for this year’s HoPE meeting, please email me and advise me of your sport speciality as per our handbook requirements listed above. Host school HoPE for 2017-18 are strongly advised to express their interest in attending this meeting. Please note that attendance at this meeting is by invitation only.

BSME PE Conference
BSME’s CPD Coordinator, Sam Fraser, and I are delighted to be working alongside Neil Rollings at Independent Coach Education for our PE Conference, 17-18 March 2017. For more information about the PE Conference and to register, please click here.
