I am delighted that, after a gap of decades (!) the BSME Newsletter has been revived. I remember a previous initiative, produced for BSME by Fieldwork, pre-dated many of the forms of electronic communication that we now take for granted. Distribution in those days was problematic – hard copies had to be mailed out: now it’s as easy as pressing a key on a keyboard – once. Of course, the hard work of preparing the content and format has been completed – and so here we are!
It is clear that, within BSME schools and staff rooms, we have an extraordinary amount of experience and knowledge – but we don’t share this very well between us. It is my hope that, in addition to news items, we will begin to disseminate and share good practice around 100 and more schools in membership and between probably getting on for 10,000 teachers who work within these.
Many thanks to our initial contributors; I hope that your pieces will spur many, many others across our region to submit material for future editions. Thanks also to Olivia Roth, our BSME Chief Operating Officer, and the BSME Team: Emma, Sam, Mier, Lisa and Amani, for their part in bringing this initiative to light and, of course, for their continuing efforts and hard work towards ensuring that BSME goes from strength to strength.
Best Wishes for a wonderful 2017!
Ed Goodwin OBE, Chairman
Welcome from the BSME COO
The first term of this academic year is best described as a whirlwind of exciting and successful BSME Events, CPD and welcoming many new School and Associate Members! It has been a privilege working closely with a committed and creative BSME Team in my new role as Chief Operating Officer.
We wanted to invite you to share in some of these successes for which this newsletter, and those to come, provides the ideal platform! If you have any good news to celebrate or outstanding practice you would like to share, please let me know!
Please set time aside to enjoy the information collated for you in this edition. We have also included summaries of all other significant conferences which took place in Term 1; if you weren’t able to attend, these are the next best thing for ensuring you know about developments in IAPS, HMC and IB, to mention but a few! Your feedback is gratefully received!
In November, Sam Fraser, our CPD Co-ordinator, introduced our inaugural Annual Leadership Conference in Dubai (to become an annual fixture by popular demand!). A new addition to our Events calendar, Netball, also launched and was an overwhelming success! Our Events Co-ordinator, Emma Wales, is already under pressure to add further age groups! More details in the Events section!
Lisa Kirkley, our Membership Officer has processed 7 new school applications this term alone! Our School Membership now stands at 102! Associate Member numbers have increased, evidence that BSME is increasing its market share in the region and is delivering services and tools relevant and useful to members.
Some of the new developments the BSME Team, with the support of the Executive Committee, have implemented this term include:
Headship Mentoring Programme
Our first two pilots are underway! These will be evaluated and presented at the Annual Conference for membership approval!
We now have a complete regional database of all British International Schools. This database is currently being used for marketing and communication purposes.
The new online Directory is on the website! Watch this space as we work to increase functionality!
Digital Marketing Co-ordinator
Our Team is now supported by a very skilled Digital Marketing Co-ordinator! We know that this role will make a huge difference to increasing BSME market share in the region and streamlining our marketing and communications!
Revised School Visit proforma
Country Reps have reported the positive impact of a revised School Visit proforma which eases school visits during the membership application process.
Membership & Sponsorship packages
We have produced high quality content for these!
BSME is endeavouring to engage the support of UK NARIC to (hopefully) ease applications for qualification equivalency when employing new staff. Updates will be sent out shortly!
New CPD offers
Two distance learning packages have been added to CPD and will be on the website soon! BSME membership will entitle you to a 10% discount for CPD from TA College and EduCare.
Google Summit of Learning 2017
Early bird discount for the Bahrain Google Learning Summit. Get future ready!
